Video: Did Ron Paul Call Mike Huckabee a Fascist?

Watch this video of Ron Paul on Fox and Friends. Steve Ducey askes Ron Paul about Huckabee’s add where there is a bookshelf that looks like a cross. First Ron Paul says he hasn’t thought too much about it, and then he goes off on a tangent about fascism that clearly shows he must have planned these comments, so yes he has thought about it. And he decided to paint Mike Huckabee as a fascist. While I am not a Huckabee fan, comparing him to a fascist is just a little much.

I heard a similar quote in the 80’s while I was in college and I’ve remembered it to this day.
I thought similar things as soon as I saw Huck’s commercial.

I view Dr. Pauls statement as a warning and not a statement against Huck.
He may have seemed over the top, but as a person who is suspicious of “religious” personalities running for publilc office, I think Dr. Paul was right on target
Why are you afraid of religion? We have never had an aethiest president, and none have forced their religion upon us. I am not being critical, just curious.
I just did a post on Ron Paul and someone who, I thought was level headed, said that I hadn’t made any good arguments against him. The list is so long on why Paul is a nut job I don’t know where to start. This incident with Huckabee is just the latest on his list.
As for Huckabee, he is so low on the totem pole for me that he is just barely above Paul so I put the 2 of them in similar categories.
It would seem that, in so few words, that is indeed what he called him. However, I’m not sure that I 100% disagree with him on this one, although his choice of words left something to be desired. Huckabee is treading down a very disturbing road in his push to appeal to the Christian “conservatives” and assume the role of pastor-in-chief of the United States. His popularity worries me and I fear that he is going to smear a big black mark across the GOP as people think that Republicans are taking the path of religion over politics.

Mike Huckabee reminds me of Jimmy Carter and Anne Coulter agreed with me today when she called him a Republican Jimmy Carter. In Anne’s article she complained that, as governor, Huckabee did not appoint one conservative He scares me.
Just for the record, Huck is earning his wings as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. His foreign policy advisor, Richard Haas, is president of the CFR.
Huck is nothing more than a puppet.

I have to be honest, I think that Huckabee is overplaying this Christian angle also. I find the whole Mitt, Huckabee fued to be a non story and I wish they would get back on the issues. I do find it strange that he seems to be leading in Iowa just because of his religion. If conservative voters looked at his record instead of his religion they may not vote for him. He is trying to out-Christian Mitt and I do find it sort of repulsive.
Gram Andrews, you had this one correct from the beginning, as did Dee. Both of you had very early reservations about him, and they seem to be coming true.
mpinkeyes, I think Chris’ comments pretty fairly represent my views so I’d like to answer the question you asked him:
I am not afraid of religion at all, and happen to be very religious myself. What I am afraid of is fascism, and both Ron Paul and Chris were pointing out with their quotations that fascism often comes pretending to be very devout so as to create an aura of righteousness for its actions.
So at least my criticism and concern here is not with religion, but with fascists using religion to advance their cause. I also don’t necessarily think it’s unfair to characterize the majority of the GOP (Huckabee included) as fascist.
Many Republicans still talk in terms of freedom and limited government, but I think such talk is all too often insincere. Under Bush and the Republican Congress, government grew more radically in size and power than under Clinton.
Another concern I have is not the effect of the church on government, but the effect of the government on the church. When the church takes the reigns of political power, it usually goes badly for the church and does injury to the Gospel.
I’d prefer that clergymen more or less stayed away from electoral politics altogether and focused on their divinely-ordained vocation, the ministry of spiritual matters. I’d prefer that Huckabee were running for President of the Southern Baptist Convention rather than the US Federal Government.
I understand your point, but I do think it is unfair to call a majority of the GOP fascists. I do think that Huckabee, and I am not a supporter, has gone overboard on his religion. He saw that he was making strides with it in Iowa, and decided to keep pushing it as a way to get ahead in the polls, and I do have a problem with that. I also have a problem with voters who would vote for someone just because of his religion, I will cast my vote based on the issues, and I believe most Republicans will do the same. I know here in New Hampshire, religion never plays a role in the election.
I guess I just have a problem with the term because it is thrown around by the left very liberally.

So, first you say that Ron Paul called Mike Huckabee ‘fascist’. Now you’re arbitrarily extending that to mean that he called the whole GOP ‘fascist’? Until you stop misrepresenting Paul’s views there’s no way to get to the bottom of this.

Ron Paul goes straight to the intellectual level in any discussion. Unfortunately, some people not well versed in political theory interpreted his statement literally, rather than as a general warning against losing the separation of Church and State.
That quote of mine you referenced above was part of my comment to W.E. Messamore’s comment. W.E. Messamore said he thought it wasn’t unfair to call all GOP members fascists. I was not saying Ron Paul called all GOP members fascists, I was saying W.E. Messamore was wrong by saying that all GOP members could be considered fascists.
