Video: Barack Obama’s Scary National Defense Policy

February 24, 2008

Here is a video I found of Barack Obama and I had to share it. Obama shares his military plan in this video and it is downright scary. He talks about cutting investments in missile defense systems, and most disturbing to me, talks about slowing the development of future combat systems. He also shares his view that is frightening in it’s naivety of a goal of a world without nuclear weapons.

This sounds too much like a return to Bill Clinton’s policy of de-prioritizing the military, and military spending in order to spend more money on social, and welfare programs for the lazy that led to September 11th.

Doesn’t sound so crazy to me. Last time I checked our military spending was by far and away the highest in the world. In fact, its more than the next 8 nations combined. You want someone to blame for 9/11, huh? Blame Clinton, Bush I and II, the FBI, and the CIA. What caused 9/11 wasn’t a lack of military might, it was a failure of our domestic security agencies.

It wasn’t a cruise missile that brought down the twin towers, it was a bunch of nutballs with BOX CUTTERS. No amount of military spending is going to stop that. Sending soldiers to die in third world hell holes won’t either. Maybe if we brought our boys back home to defend it, instead of sending them off to kill people for wealthy plutocrats, the world wouldn’t want to kill themselves to kill us.

I agree with Jack. Granted, he’ll probably have very little luck with any of this, but it’s certainly something to strive for. Imagine all those hundreds of billions of dollars going to a higher cause.

Yes, heaven forbid we don’t throw billions of dollars into our military year after year after year after year after year. If we could spend a fraction of that money on education, this country would be better off in just one generation. Or, spend it on healthcare. Or, spend it on literacy. Or, spend it on building back our reputation as a compassionate country.

Or, don’t spend the money at all and start repaying the money that GB2 has so unwisely spent.

Three comments and naturally not one has a link back to their blogs. Hit and run.
You people may have an ideological view of the world that is all hearts and flowers, but it isn’t real. The truth is that countries need a strong military presence if they want to insure peace. Without a defense system you won’t have to worry about enemies because you won’t have a country. I am sorry if this flies in the face of your lollypops and candy naive view of the world, but it is reality.
As far as spending the money on education, public education has led to your unrealistic view of the world.

What are you talking about? I never said the world is nice place, nor did I denounce the need for a military. However, we have a VERY strong military. More than powerful enough to defend our country many times over. Spending money alone will not make our country safe. Wise allocation of military funding is more important than simply spending will-nilly.

We don’t need yet another nuclear missile submarine, when we have enough nukes to turn the world into a bloody cinder. Our enemies aren’t attacking us with stealth fighters, they’re using improvised explosives and hiding in caves. Even China, the most powerful of our rivals, aren’t suicidal, and certainly won’t risk nuclear annihilation.

Strength must be brought with compassion, not used out of fear.

PS – Do you REALLY want me to advertise on your site? Didn’t think so…

    Nicklaus and the rest:

“spend a fraction of that money on education” – Illegal, see 10th Amendment of the Constitution

“Or, spend it on healthcare.” – Illegal, see 10th Amendment of the Constitution

“Or, spend it on literacy.” – Illegal, see 10th Amendment of the Constitution

“Or, spend it on building back our reputation as a compassionate country.” – In foreign aid? – Illegal, see 10th Amendment of the Constitution and the portions of the Constitution dealing with the duties of Congress.

“Or, don’t spend the money at all and start repaying the money that GB2 has so unwisely spent.” – Moot point, already spent. Need to sustain the military just debatable as to if they are overextended or not.

Tech development on the military is necessary in what is an ever increasing “tech war”. As for spending more than the next 8 countries, please specify those 8 countries and how they compare to the geographic and all other factors of the USA. If you want to say we have too many bases in too many countries, okay that is a possible point. Otherwise, compare apples to apples. But hit & run posts usually do not reply.

China doesn’t need to defeat us in a military battle. All they need to do is call in all of the debts we owe and foreclose the USA. They would never attack their biggest cash cow.

The judiciary decides what is constitutionally legal, and so far the 10th amendment hasn’t been interpreted that way. So you’re essentially wrong. Also, I don’t see that many people perturbed about the government spending tax dollars on other things than bombs, so don’t expect that to get overturned by the populous.

Next, those 8 countries are, in order, China, Russia, France, United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Italy, and South Korea. Most of whom are close allies, unless you guys get your way. Look, the military is important, but I expect more of my country than it’s ability to harm others. Your paranoia and fear is causing you to see enemies and threats were they don’t exist. Try focusing on our real security problems rather than making them by being international dickbags.

However, you lads seem impervious to reason. Also, I can’t see how I’m “hitting and running” after responding two times, but as I said, reason isn’t your strong suit.

Jack, you aren’t hitting and running. Most of the people that come here and disagree do just hit and run. I have responded to them, but they never come back to debate. It gets frustrating, and when I had three quick responses I just assumed none would be back. As you can see, the other two haven’t been back to respond.
The part of the video I posted that really is scary to me is when Obama says he would slow the development of future weapons. No matter how many weapons we have and what capabilities we currently have, if we do not invest in future weapons and technologies we risk falling behind other countries who keep investing in future weapons.
If we fall far enough behind, quantity won’t matter.

I can see Obama doing the same thing as Clinton and declare a “Peace Dividend” which was nothing more than a way to raid the defense budget stealing funds for more vote buying social programs. The whole world is rainbows and lollipops to these bleeding hearts. We might as well just get ready for the Democrats to rename our country The Peoples Republik of Amerika.

    Amendment X

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

The Tenth Amendment is one of the simplest worded Amendment in the Bill of Rights. It is also one of the most ignored. The Judiciary can only rule if something is challenged. Congress and the Presidents of late wouldn’t do anything to downgrade their own power constitutionally provided or not. As for the populace not being upset, most are apathetic. But come 2027 when the math shows we’ll be in a financial hole so deep because of spending on things prohibited by the Constitution, people may start waking up when the tough choices have to be made.

As for those 8 countries, you really need to look at the bigger picture. The USA controls about half of the money in the world, so logically we would spend more than others because we have more. We have more resources and security agreements with other countries that cause us to spend more.

China – They are gaining monetarily but there are no threats to them that trigger a need for massive military costs. They are the big dog in their area.

Russia – Recovering from economic collapse. Gee, wonder why they do not have a lot to spend.

France, UK, Germany, Italy – part of NATO and the EU. Why would they need to have a major military expenditure? Heck, we’ve got one of our largest bases in Germany. Monetary issues – The EU was formed partially to be big enough to challenge the USA on financial matters. Individually, the US has them dwarfed.

South Korea – Gee, we have a base there. Their country is small, population is small so it would make sense their expenditures are small.

Lastly, Japan who is bound by treaties ending World War II from creating an aggressive military structure. We also have a base there as part of the defense agreement.

We have more money, more resources, more commitments so those comparisons are weak. Focusing on just the immediate challenges is also foolish. Big picture please.

But when broad sweeping judgment statements such as “you lads are impervious to reason” are used it is a good indicator conversation is impossible. Translated that means I’m right, you’re wrong I’ll insult you until you agree with me. Nothing gets done that way.

Gutting defense spending during a time of war will not lead to peace; it will lead to defeat.

Missile defense is not agressive nor does it make agressive war safe because no defense system is perfect. What it does is save perhaps millions of innocent lives and reduce the chance of being successfully blackmailed or taken out by a preemptive strike.

When you compare the cost of missile defense against the cost of property destruction, economic ruin and the value of lives lost by even a limited nuclear strike by a minor nuclear power, the cost to benefit should be fantastically positve unless the system does not work even moderately well. So far, progress on the various components of a layered missile defense seem to be suggesting that a relatively effective missile defense system is not only possible but may not be that far away.

To be honest one of the main reasons our military budget is so large is largely to do with the level of our technology as well. Look at it this way. We do not have the largest Army in the world. An army is fairly cheap to equip and maintain by other countries standards, but they don’t care about quality as much as we do. We do however have the largest and most advance Navy and Air Force. In fact we are the only countries that have super carriers, of which we have 11 with more being built and that doesn’t include our fleet of amphibious assault ships which are also technically classified as carriers which carry just jump jets and helicopters. We are the only country with stealth technology on our planes, which come at a pretty penny. We have the most advanced technology when it comes to the military and a lot of these current huge costs come from this war that is going on. Yes it is a drain on our budget but until it does end, equipment must be replaced, roads and schools rebuilt, soldiers paid, bonuses to both get them to join and keep them in. People forget that R&D is incredilby expensive as well because it has some much stuff that doesn’t make it outside of the lab and involves so much trial and error. I’m not saying that this war is necessarily good by any means in even some good things come out of bad things you just have to look for it. Necessity is the mother or invention and war has a tendency to bring that upon us. Look at all of the emerging technologies that have been developed during this conflict that might not benefit us yet but will in time to come. Many things would not exist today had it not been for war necessitating the need for it including the internet which the world so clearly runs on today.

Thanks for posting this – it gives me a solid reason to vote *for* Obama.

I am all for a strong military, but Eisenhower was wise to warn us against the military industrial complex. Our current military is much more then sufficient to defend us against the combined forces of the rest of the world. It could take some deep cuts and still be more than sufficient against the absurd possibility that China and Nato find some common cause to attack the United States.

At some point we lost track of the idea of creating a military that is appropraite to some real world scenario, and instead retreated into the simplistic view that when it comes to military spending, more is always better.

Btw, I am a former United States Army officer.

You said, “He talks about cutting investments in missile defense systems”. He said, “I will cut investments in UNPROVEN missle defense systems.” Please represent a person’s statement accurately.

Having been an executive in the “industrial defense complex” for many years, I state unequivocally that profit (guaranteed by cost plus fixed fee, or CPFF, defense contracts), even if earned through unnecessary and unproven systems, trumps need and patriotism in industry.

The money we are spending right now for our war and military is around 4% from the total revenue. During WWII was around 20%. So, yes, we spend more money in dollar value, but MUCH less from the total $$ the government plays with.

More money doesn’t mean better education. America is the country that spends the most $$ per student (around $8,000) in the whole world, and when our students have to compete with others from different countries, our best and brightest are at the bottom of the list.

More money doesn’t mean better education, it means fatter theacher pockets and better pension plans. Not one penny goes for children.

Also, I didn’t ask for war in Iraq, but it started and it can’t be changed. It is hurting us, but we cannot back out half way in. This will also cause problems for us in the long run. Support our troops you say? Then you say get them out of there. We have military for a reason. We may not agree with war but we must respect our soldiers. If we pull them out then the ones lost died in vain. Anyone who joins the military knows the risks, they know what they are getting into. They were not forced to join, but once in that is their job, their duty.

    Two big problems:

    1. If we get rid of our ICBMs, then other countries will not hesitate to -nuke- us. The whole point of -nukes- is to prevent being -nuked- by having the -nukers- scared of retaliation.

    2. In a world without nukes we have world wars over and over again forever; until a one world government is established by the law of probability. The only reason we don’t have major wars in the modern age is entirely due to nuclear weapons; and nothing to do with the UN, whatsoever.

you just proved militarists’ point. Peace through strength. With a rediculously large and powerful military, you dont need it. Nobody is dumb enough to fight you. Its almost paradoxal, but the larger the military you have, the less you need it.

Drop our immense capabilities, and we become voulnerable. Suddenly you wish for anything you had just one nuclear submarine to scare the enemy with.
