I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpations. James Madison

You all can debate this issue until you hate each other. Healthcare will never stray from the path it is on. Your Senators + congress are all bought + paid for by healthcare. They would be short on campaign money if they bucked the system in place. The presidents main funding even came from healthcare. Single pay dont have much a chance to make it. They dont even let doctors or nurses be a part of the conversation. Sad But True. The debate will never reach Washington, Baucus even says it will never be a single pay, that it is hopeless.

carolinamaine, why do you have a problem with me wanting to keep more of my money so I can better care for my family?
If I had government healthcare why would I be opposed to it? That argument makes no sence, and furhtermore don't bitch about having to pay $130 every two weeks, that sounds like a bargain to me. I pay $100 every week for average healthcare. It sounds like you have it made to me.
I don't have a problem with healthcare, it just isn't the government's job to provide it. I pay for mine, others can pay for their's.
And where the fuck did you get the notion that I want everybody to get guns ans shoot foreigners? You just pulled that notion out of you ass. That is not even relevent to this post and just plain stupid.

You don't say, I am a gay white supremist, and I'm getting angry. There is nothing worse than a gay white supremist. :) On a serious note though, I have heard of the horror stories in Canada you have written about. Why does everybody think that anything, including health care, would run smoother or be less expensive if the government took it over. It seems to me the opposite would be true.

I have lived in Montreal the last 2 years (am American) and let me tell you what the first primary care physician I was able to find (after over 1/2 year) told me when he found out I came from Boston: (paraphrasing after he raved about MGH) "you probably will be disappointed with our health care system ". He went on to tell me that if I needed any ultrasounds, etc, he would advise me to try a private clinic in Westmount (wealthy anglo town near Montreal) because getting this in Montreal would take a long time. He also mentioned the hospitals here had very old equipment. The impression he gave me is that though everyone gets care, the care is just average to mediocre care.

I've been seriously ill here only once and it was a nightmare. Sure I got treated at the ER, after having to go and wait 2 days in a row and having to wait 1 week before I could get some tests done. I had to pay for the tests out of pocket (yes, people here still have to pay for blood tests, dental, eye care, etc out of pocket unless your company pays for it). As for healthcare, I "pay" for it by being taxed at a rate that would make most Americans cry. And I still pay for dental and eye care (matched by company).

The US needs a way to make health care cheaper and this should include focusing on preventative care. Forcing people to get it (i.e. fining them if they don't) is not "universal". From what I've read, mandates will benefit insurance companies. They have financial incentive to have more people paying them. But will care and treatment be better?

If life in Canada is better, it's because more people live in the same "class" and there is probably less disparity here.

There are way less people here than in the US so I don't think comparisons are fair.

Okay Captain America,

About your need to provide only for your own family:

Did you know military defense means you are provinding for a COUNTRY already. In economics, military defence is a free rider service.
I guess you want us to all have guns and shoot foreigners since you don't want to provide free rider services to citizens--WHO PAY TAXES FOR SERVICES.
So what is your problem with healthcare?

Could it be that you have government healtcare and don't have to deal with this actual scenario:

My husband pays $130 every two weeks for good insurance. He makes $37,000. I had to be hospitalized for one week.

What did Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina do?

IT HAS REJECTED EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY CLAIMS--EVEN ONE FOR A ROUTINE PHYSICAL THAT IS FREE! = $24K plus debt that has ruined my chances at a bank job.

The result--HOURS of my day spent on the phone with hospital staff and insurance people.

Did anything good come of my efforts?

My bills went to collection and ruined my good credit.

And that fine sir, is why the U.S. is 12 (despite being a world power) and lowly Canada is ranked 4 /5.

I paid for insurance, but insurance hasn't paid a dime.

Tell me why?

Oh, I already know why.

Insurance is a scam people!
