I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpations. James Madison

Theocracy? Since when did so many in this country completely abandon what the country was built upon? That collection of cells, when it is in a womans uterus is a human life, not to be compared with any other living thing. I apologize if I was not clear.
Holy crap Deb, please tell me you are being facetious. I've sought to weaken an argument by showing a fallacy in logic. Who the hell would compare a human to a fly. That was the point, a collection of cells = flies human. I can't believe we might have a McCain presidency elected by complete idiots. The North really should secede so you can have your theocracy and the rest of the nation can become Alabama and leave us the hell alone.

Terrant, I am hot against sex education, but when someone says that they would like to teach it to kindergarteners I have a problem. That is something Obama said he was for.
Interesting point on the "punishment" andle, I went to Catholic school through the eighth grade and the word "punish" was used quite a bit. Perhaps that is where Obama got that notion.

Options, when does actual thought begin in a child's life? If humanity =thought then when do you consider a child as a thinking individual? I hope you were using that equasion as a means to define the difference between a human "collection of cells" and plant life and not as a determining factor on how late a woman can have an abortion.

I am not begrudging Michelle Obama her accomplishments, they are admirable. But having been a mayor of a small town lead directly to governor of the state is also quite an accomplishment. Democrats are just as, if not more partisan than republicans. And comparing humans to flies? Now we should feel guilty about being at the top of the food chain? And I don't like having to use a cliche here, but there is no such thing as a little bit pregnant.

because humanity = thought for me. Notice how you don't protect all living creatures and the sanctity of their lives. Clearly there's something about a human that elevates their status, no? That something is consciousness, At 7 weeks there are not neural pathways to transmit pain or other senses. Do I think abortions are great, no? Would I want to give my sister the chocie if she was raped and could terminate at an early point. Yes. You want to deny that right to a woman. I guess I value a human's rights over that of a 1/2 inch long embryo.

"So a collection of living cells is life, eh?"

Yes it is. Why do you feel the need to sugarcoat the reality that abortion is the act of killing a human albeit in a very early stage of development?

Maybe it's due to the fact that I have different life experiences but my take on the punishment remark was more of a jab at the religious right that refuses to allow children to be given sex education. Before continuing, I would like to go off on a tangent.

Earlier this year, there was a bill brought up in the Indiana senate that would have mandated every girl entering grade 6 to receive the Gardasil vaccine. The ensuing debate did not revolve around the vaccine's effectiveness, how much it cost, or even the fact that Merck was clearly trying to maximize its profits. No, the debate centered around morality and how it would send a mixed signal.

Judging from some of the messages that I seen in local message boards and the letters to the editor, some of the members of the religious community were also viewing it as the removal of a deterrent and punishment to having sex before marriage.

When I was in high school, my high school had the highest pregnancy rate in the area. What was the solution that the board chose? To have someone come every couple months to preach (let's just say separation of church and state is a foreign concept where I grew up) abstinence and to scare us into not even looking at a member of the opposite sex. Guess what? Nothing changed as of the last I checked. However, I do recall at least one of these speakers actually using the word punishment in the context of what it would do your life.

Now as to whether or not my take on what Obama meant with that phrase, I don't know. I am a person who tends to give people more of a benefit of the doubt more than what they deserve at times. If my view is correct, he certainly didn't think it through enough.

So a collection of living cells is life, eh? I hope you're protecting those plants and rabbits. A DNA sequence does not equal life. If it was obvious, over half the country wouldn't disagree with you.

Palin is the saviour now huh? Maybe you should read this from somone who knows her:

Or this from CONSERVATIVE COMMENTATORS:

Deb, president of the Harvard Law Review and a U. Chicago Lecturer are quite a bit more challenging than mayor of Wassila. If the parties were reversed you wouldn't stop laughing. Stop being a partisan and open your eyes.

Also, the death penalty has NOT always killed the guilty and I find it amazing that you can reconcile man's ability to determine guilt and death but you can't rely on man's ability to determine life.
