George Zimmerman charged with second degree murder
With the investigation now complete Florida Attorney Angela Corey has decided to charge George Zimmerman with second degree murder for his fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin. In all honesty, at this point I do not have an opinion as to whether or not George Zimmerman is guilty or innocent because we don’t know all of the details of what happened that night.
From what I have read so far it doesn’t appear as if George Zimmerman is being charged with a hate crime, and judging by the reports it doesn’t seem as if this was a race based hate crime, the only question is whether or not he acted in self defense on the night he shot and killed Trayvon Martin. My concern with this news is whether or not George Zimmerman is being charged based on the facts in the case, or if Angela Corey felt she couldn’t afford to not charge Zimmerman with a crime for fear of the public backlash because of the blatantly false news reporting of NBC, ABC, and CNN coupled with the rhetoric being spouted by Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and the New Black Panthers. I hope the fear of retaliation isn’t going to make George Zimmerman a scapegoat.
In her statement Angela Corey denied that she was bowing to political pressure:
We don’t prosecute by public pressure or petition. We prosecute cases on the relevant facts of each case and on the laws of the state of Florida
The real question here is whether or not Florida’s stand your ground law applies in this case, not whether the stand your ground law is partly responsible for the killing as certain politicians would have us believe. By following Trayvon Martin on that night George Zimmerman may have put himself a situation which would negate the stand your ground law, but on the other hand if Zimmerman had stopped pursuing Martin and then Martin turned around and attacked Zimmerman he might have been justified under the stand your ground law. Either way the law itself is not the problem in this case, although the law will also be on trial here in the media. Angela Corey doesn’t believe the stand your ground law is to blame here and has stated that if the law goes on trial along with George Zimmerman the state will fight back.
With the politicization of this story I also wonder if it is possible for George Zimmerman to get a fair trial, unbiased by the faulty reporting and threats of violence from the Black Panthers, or if the jury will feel pressured to render a guilty plea in order to stem the potential rioting if he were to be found not guilty. If George Zimmerman is found guilty–and I think that is likely–I hope it will be based solely on the facts of the case, and not in fear of the reaction of the people who have already tried and found him guilty in the court of public opinion.

We may not know whether he is guilty or not, not yet, . . . but hopefully the truth will come out, either way. Yet the “log-in-your-eye” folks sure seem to “know”; the leftists and black radicals sure seemed positive . . . Judging others by their own motives?

At least you are being impartial about this case. I am afraid Zimmerman has already been tried and convicted in the court of public opinion.

I have tried to remain impartial, but many people haven’t been and those people are protesting in Florida as we write. I just hope that the truth comes out and he isn’t judged based on the fear of a not guilty verdict.

Fact is, no matter what the verdict is half will be happy half unhappy. Zimmerman might not live that much longer.
Now when some white people get murdered by blacks well… Democrats don’t seem to care so much.

This announcement today only postponed the violence which I fear is going to eventually happen. No matter how this case is decided I am afraid that people will riot on the streets, hell people riot when their favorite sports team wins a championship.

This has turned into a political firestorm; one that the entire nation is engaged in. Everyone seems to have an opinion about it. Some feel that Trayvon Martin was murdered in cold blood while others feel George Zimmerman acted in self-defense. It’s been a terrible tragedy since day one. To complicate matters race baiters like Al Sharpton stoked the fires of hate in a community that is already on the edge. In my opinion Florida Attorney Angela Corey had no other choice but to charge George Zimmerman because of the environment created by the race baiters. I’m with you Steve, I don’t have all the facts, but I do know this will be a very hard case to prosecute. After all at what point in someone’s mind does he or she believe their life is in eminent danger? It’s very subjective and I don’t believe any jury in the land can definitively conclude beyond a reasonable doubt when this point is reached. I know I couldn’t because people perceive and react to situations differently. I’m sure Ms. Corey knows this but she had to do something or risk facing a sever backlash from an angry mob who wants justice. This is really the safe route because of it goes through a trial, where all the facts will be presented and a clear manner. giving the jury an opportunity to decide whether or not there is enough evidence to convict Mr. Zimmerman of second degree manslaughter. That’s how our system works. Either way I believe this was the only way to go. Let’s get everything out in the open for the world to see and move past this tragic event.

I also think she really had not choice but to file charges on Zimmerman based on the political climate, but I am afraid the political climate will also cloud the minds of the jury and even if there is a reasonable doubt the jury may not be willing to find him not guilty.

George Zimmerman is due his day in court. The bigmouths from the Left have left this case to be decided by biggots. When will such small narrowed minded people understand that hate never solves an injustice; but, laws are meant to be followed. I, among most, would say that this is just another way the minority (Black, Latino, etc.) make a case to further their need for government assistance. Probably, the only way they will possibly find themselves.

Bob, if Zimmerman had been brought before a grand jury right away, this circus would never have gotten off the ground. The more we learn about the police (and the state’s attorney, for crying out loud!) trying to figure out whether or not to take action, and ultimately saying their hands were tied by “stand your ground” and Zimmerman’s insistence that he was acting in self defense, the more clear it is that the law is fundamentally flawed, and the actors in this particular case are amateurs.
Now we’re hoping the shooter can get a fair trial, and blaming the circus on the victim’s family because they refused to take the killing their boy lying down!

I have never blamed the victim’s family for the circus in Florida and I have stated over and over again that I hope the truth is learned and justice is served in this case. I think most people feel the same way.

When you bring in the racebaiters Jackson/Sharpton, the option is off the table for any rational thought. Combine that with lack of leadership from Obama and AG Holder stepping up so quickly on this (forget the border agents), we have big problems. I am pretty tired of the “attack first” from the left on any one of many current issues and if it doesn’t go over well, then they make a statement to apologize or say they once again “misspoke” or were “misunderstood. What is WRONG with these people? Does no one in Congress or the media think that maybe they should STOP doing this in the first place? If they were made to suffer the consequences for their words and actions, it might stop them, but nothing is ever done. They continue as if nothing happened. As for Mr. Zimmerman, I can only hope there are those out there that will give him a fair trial. No one should have to lose a child, but under what circumstances will remain to be seen. We are not the judge and jury and WE do not have all the facts. Let those that do deal with it.
