Mitt Romney repudiates Super PAC for its proposed Barack Obama/Jeremiah Wright ad
One of the concerns that many conservatives have had about Mitt Romney was that–for want of a better term–he lacks the balls to attack Barack Obama. We saw what happened in 2008 when John McCain refused to go after Barack Obama and we worried that Mitt Romney would be John McCain lite, and now it looks as if our concern has been justified.
When Newt Gingrich was still in the primary race and he called on Mitt Romney to condemn attack ads which a Romney Super PAC was running against him Mitt Romney stated he couldn’t do so because federal election law prohibited him from coordinating or communicating with Super PACs.
Fast forward to today: A Super PAC is planning on airing ads which will attack Barack Obama for his twenty year association with the America and Jew hating Reverend Jeremiah Wright, and Mitt Romney was quick to repudiate the efforts of this Super Pac:
I repudiate the effort by that PAC to promote an ad strategy of the nature they’ve described. I would like to see this campaign focus on the economy, on getting people back to work, on seeing rising incomes and growing prosperity — particularly for those in the middle class of America. And I think what we’ve seen so far from the Obama campaign is a campaign of character assassination. I hope that isn’t the course of this campaign. So in regards to that PAC, I repudiate what they’re thinking about … It’s interesting that we’re talking about some Republican PAC that wants to go after the president [on Wright]; I hope people also are looking at what he’s doing, and saying ‘why is he running an attack campaign? Why isn’t he talking about his record?’
This is precisely what Newt Gingrich asked Mitt Romney to do during the primary and yet Romney refused to do so based on federal election law, but suddenly he isn’t so worried about that law when a group decides to attack Barack Obama. This is precisely what conservatives were worried about–Mitt Romney was much more willing to attack fellow Republicans than he is to attack his main rival in Barack Obama because he fears the way he will be portrayed in the media and this is a recipe for defeat in November.
Here is a message for Mitt Romney: the media isn’t going to support you and the media isn’t going to like you no matter what you say or what you do, so if you are afraid you will get on the wrong side of the media think again because you already are simply because you associate yourself with the Republican party. Stop being so damned wishy-washy and go after this man with guns blazing–go big or go home. At least show us you are willing to fight as hard against Barack Obama as you were against Newt Gingrich, that would be a start.

This is a worrying turn Steve and unless its some clevar ploy there is geniune cause for concern. Like you I watched as McCain did this same thing in 2008 and it certainly cost him. Mitt has little to lose, as you rightly point out the MSM will never support him and will in fact remain in attack mode from now until election day. Mitt showed little restraint when attacking Gingrich as you rightly point out. The pacs will do what they want and this is a difference from the 2008 campaign—-the attacks on Obama’s past will come and be very harding hitting.

I don’t see this as any type of ploy, I honestly feel Romney is afraid of being labeled a racist so he will play this election the same was McCain did. I think you are right about the PACs, they will probably hit Obama harder this year than they did in 2008.

Well, I hope the PAC does not listen to him. Romney may think he can win by taking the high road; but there isn’t going to be a high road in this campaign. Obama has said: “you bring a knife and we will bring a gun”. So, Mr. Romney it is time to lock and load!

Yep, and didn’t Obama once tell his supporters to “get in the faces” of those who disagree with him? If Romney takes the high road it won’t be a fari fight because there is nothing Obama won’t do to keep his power.

Well said Steve. Go big or go home. The MSM hates him and will never have a kind word to say about him so let it go Mitt. YES it is about the economy…but it’s also about Obama and the man he is. The reason the economy is in such a shambles is because of Obama’s flawed view of America and people like Rev Wright helped shape this view. His failed policies are crafted in the shadow of his Marxist ideology and it’s time for Mitt Romney to call it like it is. Obama is not a swell guy, he’s a man intent on destroying our institutions and traditions so he fundamentally transform America.

Is this the same Super Pac that is financed by the Nebraska billionaire? If so, that billionaire put a stop to these ads himself, before they were even aired. He saw the plan and decided it wasn’t the direction they should go.
As for Mitt Romney repudiating them, I am not so sure that isn’t he smart thing to do. It isn’t that I don’t think Obama’s past is important, but I wonder how relevant it is in 2012. The questions people are trying to raise in this election should have been shouted out more in 2008, but the media made sure that didn’t happen. I feel relatively sure they will do the same thing this year.
Personally, I still believe the way to defeat Obama is to focus on the economy. That is what he continues to avoid and it is his Achilles’s Heel.

I am not sure if this is the same PAC you are asking about or not. You do bring up some good points Larry and these are issues that should have come up in 2008. Obama has a record now and it can be used against him, I just don’t want to see Romney make the same mistakes John McCain made.

Ditto’s Steve. I think Romney should walk and chew gum at the same time. No reason he can’t focus on the Economy, and Obama’s shortcomings both in and out of office. He needs to study many weapons against this Administration and the MSM in order to blow them off the face of politics. Let the SuperPacs off the leash!
