Wait a minute, the people of New York and New Jersey are still struggling in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy? Didn’t Barack Obama already take care of this?

November 30, 2012

Shortly before the election Hurricane Sandy tore through the northeast and many people–myself included–felt the effects of this storm. Many people had it much worse than I did after this devastating storm ripped through the region and left images of destroyed homes, flooded out houses, long gas lines, and people struggling to get the food and water they needed for survival which was eerily similar to Hurricane Katrina during the Bush years.

But at least the federal government learned from Hurricane Katrina and the response would be much better than it was in  the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina when that hurricane wreaked its vengeance on the gulf region, right? After all we have Barack Obama in change now and not the inept and uncaring President Bush so we didn’t have to worry about this being turned into a political issue or anything like that.

Two days before the election Barack Obama put his sympathy face on and appeared in the destroyed region with his new buddy Chris Christie and promised the people they would not be left behind like the people of New Orleans were–he was there for them, he felt their pain and he would cut though any red tape to to make sure they had what they needed.

What I told the governors and the mayors is what I’ve been saying to my team since the start of this event, and that is we don’t have any patience for bureaucracy, we don’t have any patience for red tape, and we want to make sure that we are figuring out a way to get to yes, as opposed to no, when it comes to these problems,” Obama said

And damn! Didn’t he look presidential while he was doing this? With the problem solved in New York and New Jersey Barack Obama was then free to head back on the campaign trail knowing FEMA was in control and the good people would not have to be worried about a government slowed down by bureaucratic red tape.

So imagine my surprise when I read this story today about the situation on the ground in New York and found out that nothing has changed, FEMA is still inept, and the president has done nothing to cut through the red tape.

We are the people – we are the middle class, and we are getting the finger,” said frustrated resident Scott McGrath, who personally spoke to President Obama and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo when they came to Staten Island to inspect storm damage earlier this month. “You were there when I met Obama, and I told the president … that the middle class was getting the royal finger. And he said, ‘FEMA works for me.’”

“FEMA ain’t doing nothing,” McGrath added. “They keep going around in circles.”

For all of his bluster and his posturing nothing has changed since the days of Hurricane Katrina–other than the fact that Barack Obama made the appearance of being move involved in the situation–because this is what happens when people are reliant on the federal government and big, bloated federal bureaucracies for help in times of need.

The sad irony here is the fact that part of what might have cost Mitt Romney the election in the end may have proved he was right.  Hurricane Sandy provided the Democrats with a perfect opportunity to use Mitt Romney’s position on FEMA against him. During one of the primary debates Mitt Romney alluded to the fact he would cut FEMA funding and send disaster relief back to the states, the localities, and gasp, the dreaded private sector.

Hurricane Sandy provided a contrast between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney on this issue which was undeniable at this critical time before the election, and while Barack Obama promised to cut the red tape and help the people those very same people were reminded that Mitt Romney wanted to cut funding to FEMA.

In hindsight it looks as though Mitt Romney was right because we can see that the federal government can not be counted on in a time of disaster and these people might have been better served if the states and the localities were in charge of the situation just as Mitt Romney had advocated.

And just think, these are the same people who will be in charge of our healthcare soon enough…..

It’s worse than this Patriots! in some areas FEMA is luring people out of their homes with the story that their buses will take them to a hotel for warmth and food. The FEMA bus drove all around for 4 hours and then dropped the people off at Tent City where there was no heat. They had heaters, but it took 3 days for their tents to become warm. No one is allowed to leave and even have to show ID when using the Port-O-Pottys. There are armed guards around the perimeter. I got this story on another web site that I will try to send to you. It’s far more horrendous than we can imagine!!! 😦

The problem with this is Oh! BAMA will say anything to get to get a vote . He really did not head back to the campaign trail , He never left it. Nice photos , caught some TV spots and he does not give a dam about their problems. The people in New York and New Jersey have got to be as bad as the people New Orleans and they several things in common . all the places start with NEW, they got hit by a hurricane, and they all have no brains. Fill up your tank with gas, evacuate low lining arrears , know what your evaluation is . test the generator , buy extra ammunition if you plan to stay, try not to lose your life , make sure your children are safe

You are right, Obama never really left the campaign trail did he? He used the storm as a campaign photo op and the media went right along with him.

Wendy’s story os scary. I have never liked that FEMA was militarized. I would prefer local police keep the peace.

So, how did you find this story? Surely the MSM isn’t carrying it, are they?

Why the rancor among those rabid Obama supporters? Didn’t they vote 55% or more for 4 more years of the fixer in chief? Any logical thinking person would have to agree that FEMA should be sunsetted along with the dept of energy and the dept of education. They function as money pits while doing nothing more than serving as shining examples of goverent inefficiency. Of course Romney was dead on when advocating for cutting funding to FEMA and leaving and leaving money and resources with the state localities. As we know here in the northeast the bulk of aid has come from locals. So NYers and NJites while we feel for you we also recognize that you have been hoisted on your own pitards, a consequence of your overwhelming support for the re electing of a proven failure. He’s your man so buck up but don’t hold your breath while waiting for this administration to do the right thing.

Agreed! While we feel sorry for them and the situation they are in, it is hard to ignore the fact that they still voted for this clown and now we are all going to get what we deserve for giving this guy four more years.

The wheels of big government move very slow. I would think that had the State or County level been dealing with this, those people would be getting help, but once you throw the Feds into the fray, you have a botched mess. You are right about these people voting for him, KNOWING what he is and what he has already done and still they did it, they are seeing what an amateur he is now. The media has moved on from this and it is no longer a story and Obama doesn’t need any more photo-ops, so it “doesn’t exist” now. Sad situation this is, because there are those in need and we have a president still on the campaign trail and planning another massive Christmas trip.

FOr the most part the media is ignoring Sandy now because it would shine a light on the fact that the feds response to this storm is no better than the response to Katrina and they don’t want to shine a negative light on Obama.

I still can’t believe we reelected this bum. How sad. He prayed on the pain of these people and used them for a photo op to boost his appeal. And Americans bought it.

I know you put “prayed” on the pain, but I would also have said “preyed” on the pain of those people. How sad that he would do it in the first place, but how evil that he probably did it knowingly. We have a very self centered man(term used lightly) in OUR HOUSE.

Well, we have proof, Larry. We don’t like it, but now WE have to deal with it. Those that felt warm and fuzzy about voting him back in, will want someone else to clean up their mess. How very fitting we are left with their mistake…we tried to tell them, they didn’t listen.

No they didn’t listen. I guess sometimes seeing is believing and perhaps when these four years are over the American people will finally wake up.

Dean, it seems the higher up the chain of command you go, the more red tape there is,,,ie. EMA, IEMA, FEMA here in Illinois,,,EMA works the best, it is local and more hands on,,,not a bunch of idiots standing around trying to look important and saying, “I’ll get back to you”.

I have heard similar stories from a lot of local people. I have been lucky. I was missed by the Piece City tornado by a few hundred yards, and I live 30 minutes from Joplin, MO. I know lots of people who have been devastated by natural disasters. They seem to echo your sentiments.

Our local EMA has been an asset to the community, here in Macon County, but when you start bringing in the other groups, you get a cluster *uck, if you know what I mean. No one knows what the others are doing and it becomes a mess. We had a tornado come thru a local area subdivision, a number of years back, then a second one came thru the next day. Many houses were leveled. We drill for disasters a couple times a year and the siren system was checked by volunteers each month and fixed if any were down. We had no deaths, thanks to our working system. We had Hillary Clinton show up and the IEMA people were more worried about her safety and showing her the damage than the people that HAD the damage, go figure. The emergency vehicles were blocked from the ingress/egress routes because of her security vehicles. We brought in the LOCAL Red Cross, Salvation Army and Ham Radio people for communication, we did not want FEDERAL money, we took care of our own. I think that would be a wish decision that ALL communities should partake in, I think more gets done and there is not the waiting. Sometimes, it seems the waiting is indefinitely as we are seeing out East, now.

Bet they are armed, as well! I am SO glad I live in the land of the free, at least for them time being, aren’t you?
