Mitch McConnell offered to hold a vote on Barack Obama’s fiscal cliff proposal but Harry Reid blocked it

December 5, 2012

I promised myself and my readers that I was not going to cover the fiscal cliff debate because I am frankly tired of having to go through this every few months, neither side is really serious about this issue, but something happened today which I found interesting so I am going to spend just a few short minutes to write about it.

Earlier today Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell offered an amendment to the Russian trade bill which would have given the Senate the chance to vote on Barack Obama’s fiscal cliff proposal:

Last week [Treasury] Secretary [Timothy] Geithner brought up a proposal that was so unserious,” McConnell said on the floor, “I would like to see if my Democratic friends would like to support it

As my regular readers might already know, I am opposed to any amendments which are added to legislation which is irrelevant to the original legislation, as this is, but this happens all the time and it is done by both parties when they want to pass legislation which would never pass when voted on by itself so I found Harry Reid’s reaction to this proposal, which would give Barack Obama everything he wanted, to be quite interesting indeed. Harry Reid blocked it.

The purpose of this bill is to protect American jobs,” Reid said. “Are we going to get serious here and legislate or is this more of the political stunts that the Republican leader is going to pull today?

Harry Reid is right about one thing, this is a political stunt, but suddenly he is opposed to amendments which have nothing to do with the original legislation? If he had always held this view the 100 watt light bulb wouldn’t have been banned.

So the question is, why wouldn’t Harry Reid allow the Democrats to vote on a proposal issued from the president? I think this leads credence to the theory that not only are the Democrats willing to go over the fiscal cliff but they want to.

The constitution gives each chamber the right to make their own rules but when we can;t seem to find and elect adults, this is what we get. Sad!

But yet they are unwilling to do it and with Boehner in charge it will never happen.

Yes John it is political theater. The fact that people making minimum wage pay a lager percentage of their income in taxes than the people making a billion dollars a year is not theater. It is a fact. It’s great knowing Mitch has got the billionaires back!

If you have a good job and no write offs, you can pay up to 50% of your income in one form of tax or another if you count the money your employer pays for you.

If you are a Romney you pay 13.9% plus some more in possibly property taxes and a little sales tax. Let’s say 20%. Working Americans can pay 2 1/2 times as high of effective rate in taxes than the filthy rich.

This is the system ‘ol Mitch supports. Anyone see a problem with this? Anyone?

John is saying this is political theater because he believes a deal is already done and what we are seeing now is both parties trying to spin this to their advantage before the deal is announced.

Thanks lou. That article is the biggest croc I have read in a while. Raising taxes on the wealthy won’t decimate the middle class. It may however hurt yacht builders, and private jet manufacturers. In fact I think the article was an attempt at some sort of comedy.

      Now Google this.

Yeah, there really is nothing funny about this, Obama keeps saying he wants to work with Republicans while saying at the same time it is my way or the highway.
