Open thread for Sunday, May 17th: ‘The Eternal’

May 17, 2015

open-threadHere is the open thread for Sunday, May 17th. Please feel free to post links to interesting articles and to discuss whatever issues arise during the course of the day. Nothing is off-topic here.

Last week we covered 11 stories, did you miss any of them? If so there is an easy way to make sure it does not happen again. I understand that all of you are busy and cannot always find the time to check the blog for updates so why not subscribe to America’s Watchtower and receive email updates whenever I write a new post? That is the easiest way to follow the blog to ensure you never miss another post.

In addition to subscribing you can also follow America’s Watchtower on Facebook and Twitter by clicking the links on the right. But you will get more than that for I often post links to articles I probably will not be writing about so it is a great way to keep up with what is happening.

The Twitter widget in the sidebar is fully interactive. This widget updates my tweets in real time and allows you to respond to or retweet my tweets right from the blog. It also allows you to tweet me right from America’s Watchtower. How cool is that! If you do not have a Twitter account what better reason do you need to sign up for one!

Well, I have gone back and forth over the last couple of days trying to determine which band was going to be number 5 on my countdown and which one would come in at number 4 but I have made my decision. Coming in at number 5 is Joy Division.

There is precious little live video of the band because their career was tragically cut short after only two albums with the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis. (Tomorrow will actually be the 35th anniversary of his death.) The remaining members of the band eventually rose up and became New Order, a band which pioneered the electronic movement in the 1980’s.

Up first is “Digital” recorded live in January of 1980:

Next up is “She’s Lost Control:”

And here is my favorite Joy Division song–the haunting yet morbidly beautiful “The Eternal:”

As I wrote above, tomorrow will mark the 35th anniversary of the death of Ian Curtis so here is a video entitled The Tragedy of Ian Curtis which includes interviews with his bandmates. (There is some colorful language so be forewarned.)

Here we are at Sunday again! Time is flying this week for me, I get my grandsons for a week on Thursday, 5 1/2 and 2 years old. This Nana is excited and knows she will be beat when they leave, but we should have lots of fun!
My #3 for this week is Led Zeppelin from the late 60’s, 1968 to be exact. The 2 most recognized members are Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. Zeppelin had its’ own sound during that time, metal, but different. The guitar riffs were made popular by Jimmy Page and oh how he could do it, a master at it. Hope you enjoy what I post on videos and hope they don’t duplicate like I have been having trouble with them doing (fingers crossed)! Enjoy!

This first one, I will let Jimmy Page tell the story of Stairway to Heaven. You can see he has age on him and I have that album and there is nothing like playing vinyl (that is a TURNTABLE to those of you that might not recognize it), if you have never done it, try it:

Here is Black Dog for your enjoyment:

Check out the triple neck guitar that John Paul Jones is playing! You don’t see that every day. For your pleasure Going to California:

Ha, it didn’t mess up this week! Today could possibly be a good day, well, except for the massive amounts of rain coming, but I will take this win against the machine not triple posting on me as a good sign!

Of course you can not go wrong with Zeppelin, they were my favorite band for a few years and yes I did have several Zeppelin albums on vinyl! That was an interesting take on the making of “Stairway.”
Back when I was into this band there was no VCRs and no VHS tapes and at that time we had to actually look in the local papers to see what was playing at the movies, I still remember seeing that “The Song Remains the Same” was coming to a theater near me for a midnight showing and of course we went to it!

Was not a big fan of Joy Division, but it is something different to listen to. Of course it is not on my top 10, but you probably would not expect it to be.

I must be really stuck in the late 60’s and early 70’s this morning, shame on me, SDL! I will try harder next week to “accept” different!!

I am who I am, I guess SDL. We have certain groups we identify with from years past. We are young once again when we hear them, that is a good thing. I do try and keep an open mind with newer groups and I appreciate the opportunity to see what other people like, but you are right, I do not have to like everything….that would be pretty boring, wouldn’t it? The Beatles were a big thing and just starting out when I was in about 5th or 6th grade and girls at that age, went absolutely nuts over them, going into their teens. I actually like more of the later Beatles, for example Abbey Road album.
