Senate passes a Timetable for Defeat in Iraq
Well, we all knew it was coming and today it’s finally here. The Democrats have officially surrendered to the terrorists. Osama bin Laden was right all those years ago when he called America a paper tiger. We no longer have the will or resolve to fight for our country. It’s a sad day when America just curls into a ball and hides from the true challenges that face her.
Harry Reid said “We ask the president to read and to sign this bill. The president has a choice – heed the call of the American people, a bipartisan majority of Congress, military experts to change course or keep our troops committed to an all but ended civil war. The choice is an easy one,”
A bipartisan majority? Joe Leiberman voted against it, to nobody’s surprise, and only two Republican voted in favor of the bill. That hardly sounds like a bill with bipartisan support. It sounds like the vote was basically along party lines.
Nancy Pelosi called the war in Iraq “the greatest ethical challenge facing our nation.” And she is right about this. Unfortunately she is on the wrong side of this issue. This war is ethical and necessary and history will prove the president right. Someday generations will look back at this and wonder what were the Democrats thinking, to steal a line from Al Gore in his global warming senate testimony.
Former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, and current king of pork, Robert Byrd said “The president has failed in his mission to bring peace and stability to the people of Iraq,” “It’s time to bring our troops home from Iraq.”
Nothing this dispicable racist says has any validity with me.
Mitch McConnell’s take,”The solution is simple: Take out the surrender date, take out the pork, and get the funds to our troops,”
That’s the truth. Now that all the political points have been scored by playing to the hard left it’s time to work on the real bill. The bill that the senate knows the president will sign. They knew this bill had no chance of being signed so they took the opportunity to placate the left while at the same time not cutting off funding for the troops. They are too cowardly to cut funding. They know what the backlash would be. If they really had a mandate in the last election to end the war, why are they afraid to cut funding?
If the war is lost, as Harry Reid said last week, then it would be irresponsible for the Democrats not to cut off funding immediately. The truth is they want to make the president leave Iraq before 2008 because if they win the presidency they don’t want to have to make the decision on whether to surrender or not. They want to force the president to withdraw so it looks like he lost the war, they don’t want to pull the troops out if one of them is elected president because they don’t want to be perceived as the side that lost the war. They are the ones who have tied the president’s hands in the war and made it hard to win by undercutting the war effort. If the war is eventually lost, it’s on the Democrat’s hands.
