New Hampshire voters, stop Whining about Civil Unions, you voted for them

New Hampshire voters, I am calling you out.

Last November New Hampshire voters showed up at the polls and voted in two new United States representatives, Carol Shea-Porter and Paul Hodes. They also voted out many incumbent state legislators and replaced them with Democrats. For the first time in over 100 years Democrats control every branch of the state government.

Many conservatives stayed home to send Republicans a message, and there was also a record number of straight ticket ballots cast.

We now face the possibility of a sales and/or income tax, many new Nanny State regulations such as a cell phone ban in cars, mandatory helmets for motorcycle riding, smoking bans, mandatory seat-belt use, trans fat ban, and even a ban on accidentally releasing helium balloons into the air.

Civil unions have been passed and the governor will sign the bill into law shortly. Polls show most residents are against civil unions.

Now that all these changes are taking place, I read many opinion pieces in the papers who are dismayed at all the changes. Many people write to say that they voted to send a message to the president to end the war, not to vote for radical new social change in New Hampshire. Their words, not mine.

I say, YES YOU DID!

If you wanted to send the president a message about the war,sending new rep’s Shae-Porter and Hodes, which you did, was the right way to do it. But by voting a straight ticket ballot which ousted many conservative people and replaced them with liberals you did vote for these changes. What do the state legislators have to do with the federal government and the war? Nothing. You should never vote on a national issue in a local election.

If you didn’t know where the state legislators stood on these issues( except the helium balloons legislation, nobody saw that coming), and you voted for them anyways, shame on you, many of these issues have been voted on before including civil unions and were voted down by the Republicans.

So now I hear many people asking to let the people vote on civil unions, I say you already did last November when you voted for all these changes in New Hampshire. If you didn’t realize how you were voting, shame on you. If you’re a conservative that stayed home to send the president a message, you have no right to complain, you are a big part of what is happening here. Shame on you.

Naturally the new legislators are going to push their agendas, there is nothing wrong with that. That’s what they were elected to do. If you were so shortsighted or blinded by your hatred for George W Bush that you either voted for everyone from the opposite party, or you just stayed home, I say stop your whining. This is what you voted for.

As Bill Parcels said when he left the Patriots ” if they want you to cook the dinner, the least they could do is let you shop for some of the groceries”. Well New Hampshire, last November you went shopping for the groceries, now it is time to eat your vegetables.
