Author claims President Committed Impeachable Offenses
That’s the claim made by Frederick Schwarz Jr. and Aziz Huq in their new book.
They claim that by fighting back against the people who attacked us the president can be impeached. Here is the quote:
President Bush and Vice President Cheney committed impeachable offenses by “adopting the tactics of the enemy” in response to 9/11
Are they really serious here? Because the president retaliatedagainst an enemy that attacked us we should impeach him. I guess we should treat these attacks as separate, individual criminal activities and try the attackers in court when they are caught. That was our policy before Sept. 11th and it lea to Sept. 11th. We can’t afford to make these mistakes again. What is that quote about forgetting history?
Roger Pilon, director of the center for constitutional studies at the CATO Institute, said in response that the authors and others were trying to convert what should be political issues into legal ones to be ultimately decided in the courts.“The last thing we want is for foreign policy to be conducted by lawyers and courts, yet we are moving increasingly in this direction,”
I’m afraid we are moving in that direction, not only on this issue but on all issues in general. It is too dangerous to let the courts and especially lawyers get involved involved in trying to set foreign policy. It is the courts who are overstepping their bounds.
Throughout American history, presidents have “reacted in ways that do not involve all three branches,” Huq said. He acknowledged this was also true of Democrats, citing Franklin Roosevelt’s internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II.
Can you imagine the president doing something like that? How can he have all this over-reaching power if he couldn’t get away with many of the things other war time president have gotten away with? The problem with this war is we have been trying to fight it just the opposite way, by minimizing collateral damage, by not attacking the enemy when they hide in Mosques. We are trying to fight the enemy and not offend them at the same time.
