United States Soldier tells me of his Feelings on Sept 11th, and how the Democrats have let him Down

May 15, 2007

On May 3rd I had a post titled A US Soldier asks “Why has America Abandoned us?” It contains a link to an article of the same title written by a major in the US army. It is a very powerful plea to the American people asking what have American soldiers done to deserve having the American people and politicians desert them.

This post prompted a comment from arclightzero who also runs this blog.

Here is that comment:

There is an awful truth behind that letter. I was deployed aboard the USS Enterprise when 9/11 happened, and my battle group (which was on its way home at the time) was turned around and sent back to the Arabian Sea, where we sat for many weeks watching and waiting, not knowing exactly what was happening.

The hardest part about being in a conflict is wrestling with what’s going on back home while you’re half-way around the world fighting for a cause that you believe in.

When 9/11 happened, we were devastated. There was a great deal of dismay throughout the ship, because many of us felt as if we had failed somehow; that we who had sworn to serve and protect our Nation weren’t there when we were needed.

The greatest pick-me-up that we had was the support we received from home. The way the Nation rallied behind us was absolutely awe-inspiring. They made us feel as if we were a solid force standing between evil and home, and we took that task seriously. In October, when we finally started to fight, we fought harder and stronger than I think we could have ever expected, mostly because we had thousands of letters coming in from people back home who were reminding us why we were fighting half-way around the globe.

This is why the current attitude, spearheaded by the dems in congress, pisses me off so much. I cannot fathom how we would have responded out there had we not had the support of our Nation behind us. I can think of nothing worse than to be on the battlefield and get the message from congress that “the war is lost.”

I have to wonder what goes on the heads of these people where they think it’s acceptable to pull their public support for those serving in Iraq under the guise of “things have gone wrong so it’s better to run away than fix the problems and push forward.”

These people make me sick.

I think that sums it up so much better than I can. Do the Democrats forget that veterans still have a vote? Or do they just don’t care? Do they figure they can turn enough American citizens against the war so that the veterans who fight and vote wont have enough votes to change their current agenda of winning the white house?

I only wish the Democrats and the American people would actually listen to some of the people over there or who were over there, this fight may no longer be popular, but is neccessary and justified.

I hope the next president has the courage and conviction that our soldiers show every day.
