Decorative Flags Stolen and Burned in Boston Protest over Memorial Day Weekend
Yesterday, Memorial Day, I made a decision not to post anything. I re-posted a video tribute to the troops that I originally posted on Saturday so that it would be the top post all day on Memorial Day. Just my little way of honoring those who died fighting for our country.
However, I found it very difficult not to post when I read this.
I fought off the urge to comment on this until today. I felt that if I wrote about this on Memorial Day I would be playing right into their hands. I would be helping them politicize Memorial Day, which I refuse to do. I would actually be justifying their actions in a way.
A trash compactor was found on fire in Natick, Ma. early Friday morning. It contained decorative flags that were placed around the town for Memorial Day. Someone stole the flags and burned them.
BOSTON — Natick police said they were searching for whomever stuffed decorative American flags in trash receptacles around the town square and set them on fire.
Authorities said an off-duty officer noticed a trash receptacle on fire in a Natick park near the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority station at about 4 p.m. on Thursday.
“I will tell you — I was very, very upset about this. This area, this park, Moran Park, is considered sacred ground by the veterans here in Natick,” veteran John MacGillivray said.
“I am aware that people have a right to protest, but they don’t have a right to take property that doesn’t belong to them and that’s here to honor the veterans. It is a disgrace,” MacGillivray said.
To say it’s a digrace doesn’t even begin to explain how I feel about this. I really don’t think I can put it into words. They are taking a holiday meant to honor lost heroes, fighters of our freedom, defenders of our country, and using it to protest the Iraq War.
They are using one of the very freedoms that soldiers(soldiers we are supposed to be honoring) died defending, to show utter disrespect for those soldiers and our country. Can you image what these heroes could possibly be thinking right now if they could see this? They would not believe what America has turned into.
This just shows an utter contempt for the military that probably goes far beyond the war in Iraq.
John Edwards asked people to go out and protest this Memorial Day weekend, he asked people to show their opposition to the war by dishonoring the veterans who died for our right to protest. Now he seems to have gotten what he wanted. I’m sure somewhere John Edwards will see this story and smile. This is the type of people he is playing to, hell, this is the type of people all the Democrat candidates are playing to. It’s their base, and it’s reprehensible, despicable, deplorable, disgusting, unconscionable, and many other adjectives I can’t think of right now. One thing that it is not is patriotic, as the left would have us believe.
So, how did local veterans react to this?
A veterans group said it would properly dispose of the flags.
With the class and dignity you would expect from our courageous military personnel. Whoever did this is a coward, hiding under the cover of night, nameless and faceless, showing his hatred for our military. It kind of shows you the contrast between someone who would commit this crime in the name of protest against America, and the people who volunteer to defend America.
Those responsible for the vandalism face felony charges for destruction of property for destroying the flags and damaging the trash compactors.
I hope they catch the bastards responsible for this and prosecute them. However this is Massachusetts we are talking about, so even if they catch them they will go light on them.

Very sad. I don’t understand why people who are angry about this war can’t put that much aside and at least show their respect for those who have given their lives throughout our history. It just makes no sense.
Also, thanks for the video tribute. That was very thought provoking 🙂

Evidentally one day is just too much to ask for. It’s a shame.
