Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick(D) Tries to Postpone Gay Marriage vote Until he has the Votes his way

As was reported at New England Republican, Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick is trying to trample over the state constitution by delaying a vote by the constitutional convention to put  gay marriage on the ballet.

You can read my previous post here, first he was offering jobs to people on the committee who wanted to send the issue to the ballet so that he could replace them with people who would vote against it, now he is trying to delay the vote until he can persuade people to vote his way.

Gov. Deval Patrick said he’ll ask lawmakers to postpone next week’s scheduled vote on a proposed constitutional amendment barring gay marriage if he doesn’t think there are enough votes to kill the measure.

“We want a vote that goes the right way, that keeps us off the ballot,” Patrick said Thursday after attending an evening fundraiser for MassEquality, an advocacy group that opposes the amendment. “If we need more time, we’ll ask for more time.

We want a vote that goes the right way.

So, he is willing to have a vote, but only if it goes the way he wants it to. Now that is democracy for you, isn’t it? It doesn’t matter what the majority says, only what the governor wants. The state constitution requires a vote on whether to send this to the ballet or not, by delaying it he is depriving the citizens of their constitutional rights.

But of course the dissenters must be bigots.

“There are still great passions and great fear and great intolerance on the other side,” he said.

An easy cop out for pandering to the very vocal gay lobby.

The bottom line here is that the citizens went through the proper procedure to get a gay marriage ban amendment vote on the ballet and the governor is using unconstitutional means to deny them.
