Bloomberg Leaves GOP, Becomes an Independent

June 19, 2007

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has quit the Republican party and has filed papers to become an independent. This has fueled the previous speculation that he would run as an Independent for president in the 2008 election.

Bloomberg plunged the country’s political landscape further into chaos on Tuesday evening when he released a statement saying he was quitting the Republican Party.

“I have filed papers with the New York City Board of Elections to change my status as a voter and register as unaffiliated with any political party. Although my plans for the future haven’t changed, I believe this brings my affiliation into alignment with how I have led and will continue to lead our City,” Bloomberg said.

This is not the first time he has switched parties as he was a registered Democrat before he switched to Republican.

This sounds like a man who will do anything to be elected.

At first I couldn’t decide which party would be hurt more by his candidacy, the Republicans or the Democrats. But I have desided that this has to hurt the Democrat candidates. Bloomberg has a very liberal social record so I don’t think too many Rebublicans would switch their vote and vote for him. On the Democrats side though, I do think he will draw votes.

This could be just an added dimension to an already interesting 2008 election.
