Political Correctness and the Decline of Free Speech

June 27, 2007

Free speech is under attack. The perpetrator in this case is political correctness. The fact that you have to be careful about what you say for fear of offending someone who doesn’t agree with you is a form of censorship. There is no place for this in a free society.

Only one-third of respondents in a new survey of British adults believe free speech exists in their country, and only one in five believe that they can safely voice their opinion on a sensitive issue.
While 98 percent of respondents said they believed in the right to free speech, only half said they had ever spoken out on a sensitive issue.

Only half of the people who responded to the poll had the nerve to speak out on a sensitive subject. Scary. How can you have debate on issues when half of the people on one side of the issue are afraid to speak out? You can’t. The left has managed to direct so much guilt at people that don’t agree with them that they are afraid to speak out about what they believe in.

Political correctness is nothing but an attack on free speech, an attempt to stifle debate. And it appears to be working. The criminalization of conservative ideals in order to de-legitimize them needs to be stopped, NOW!

“We supposedly live in a truly democratic society where freedom of speech is a fundamental right enjoyed by everyone,” friction.tv Chief Marketing Officer Andy West said in a press release. “However these survey results have shown rather powerfully that most adults in the U.K. feel that this is not the case.”

West added, “We live in such a politically correct society that people don’t know what they can and can’t say anymore and there is a constant fear that if you go against the grain, you’ll be vilified by your peers.”

While this study was done in the UK I guarentee that the results would be similar in the United States.
