Latest Iowa Poll (July 26th) Shows Edwards, Romney Leading

July 26, 2007

Among Democratic contenders, former Sen. John Edwards now holds a 5-point lead, climbing up to 27 percent. Sens. Hillary Clinton, D-New York, and Barack Obama, D-Illinois, both fell 6 points. They now sit at 22 and 16 percent, respectively. On the Republican side, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney bumped his numbers up to 25 percent, and unofficial GOP candidate Fred Thompson rose to 14. Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani slips a bit, falling to 13, and Sen. John McCain, who had been the leader of the pack in May, is now seeing 10 percent.

The poll, conducted by KCCI-TV out of Des Moines, surveyed 600 likely voters who vote regularly in state elections. It carries a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Romney also holds a lead in the New Hampshire primary polls, yet the media continues to report Romney in fourth place in national polls. National polls mean nothing during the primary season. If Mitt wins Iowa and New Hampshire he could be on his way to an upset win. But who would consider this an upset? The media, who continues to tell us he is in fourth place.

The national polls also tell us Edwards is a distant third yet he is leading in Iowa. Who knows what could happen if he pulls off what the media would consider an upset.

To be honest I hope Mitt really isn’t in 1st because he is by far not my first pick.

And actually when you think about it I’m not sure how much this means, especially since you consider Edwards leading and he really doesn’t have a prayer of getting the Dem nomination.

Mitt’s not my first choice either. However I do think in a debate he would run circles around Hillary.

I’m on the ground now near the border of Iowa and Illinois so I’m in the ‘belly of the beast’ so to speak. Any of the Rudy or McCain people who think that Mitt is behind them is stupid, stupid, stupid. Even in Illinois, where allegedly Rudy and McCain had decided to concentrate and dumped Iowas several months ago, the following is typical. The McLean GOP booth at the county fair had Mitt Romney and Ron Paul literature the first day. Ron Paul folks even had their OWN booth, which NONE of the other candidates had. By day two, the Rudy people, a day late and a dollar short (rather like Rudy on Sept. 11, 2001) were finally there in the tent with some literature. It’s day three now, and no sight of ANY other candidates’ literature except Mitt, Ron, and Rudy. McCain can kiss it goodbye, and if Fred Thompson doesn’t stop letting his wife wear the pants in the family, he can kiss it goodbye too Since 40% of the GOP is against the war and is thus Ron Paul’s natural prey, the other 60% will be split several ways. EVEN IF it’s only between Rudy and Mitt, and McCain is out, and even if Rudy dominates Mitt 2 to 1 (and if anything, at the rate they’re going, it may be the other way around), he’ll barely tie Ron Paul at this point.
