Do We Need Another 9/11 to Save America?

August 9, 2007

That is what the author of this article believes. He states that America was united against the enemy after 9/11, which it was, but what does he blame for America turning on the Iraq war? It isn’t that Americans believe we can’t win, it’s the American people’s short attention span, the instant gratification mentality that has become the norm. Anything worth having, isn’t worth waiting for.

Americans have turned their backs because the war has dragged on too long and we don’t have the patience for a long slog. We’ve been in Iraq for four years, but to some it seems like a century. In contrast, Britain just pulled its soldiers out of Northern Ireland where they had been, often being shot at, almost 40 years.

That’s not the American way.

In Iraq, we don’t believe our military is being beaten on the battleground. It’s more that there is no formal “battleground.” There is the drip of daily casualties and victory is not around the corner. Americans are impatient. We like fast food and fast war.

Isn’t that the truth? Americans want what they want and they want it now. They DO want victory in Iraq, they just want it NOW. Hell, I want victory now, I wish we won years ago also, but I understand the ramifications that fighting with a full out military onslaught would have in today’s politically correct society. So I sit and wait while our soldiers fight the mission to secure the freedoms that I enjoy. I thank them every day, I think about them every day, and I realize every day how lucky I am to have been born in this country. This blog is my little way of supporting the troops. I understand what they are doing, and feel guilty that I haven’t done more, or didn’t do more when I was younger. I fight the war of words daily while they fight the real war. And I thank them. I remember 9/11 and never want to live through it again, even more importantly, I don’t want my children to have to live through it again. So what does the author of the above-linked article think will unite Americans once again?

What would sew us back together?

Another 9/11 attack.

The Golden Gate Bridge. Mount Rushmore. Chicago’s Wrigley Field. The Philadelphia subway system. The U.S. is a target-rich environment for al Qaeda.

Is there any doubt they are planning to hit us again?

If it is to be, then let it be. It will take another attack on the homeland to quell the chattering of chipmunks and to restore America’s righteous rage and singular purpose to prevail.

The unity brought by such an attack sadly won’t last forever.

The first 9/11 proved that.

Sadly, I feel that if 9/11 could only manage to bring the country together for a short period of time, another 9/11 type attack would only do the same. Americans would come together only to be driven apart by partisan politics. It’s a sad state of affairs, but it is the country we live in nowadays.

Political correctness has been telling Americans what to think and feel for so long now that the vast majority of Americans can no longer think for themselves. If 9/11 didn’t wake up America to the dangers we face as a civilization than nothing will.

Let’s just hope we never find out if another 9/11 will save us. The first one didn’t wake us up, the second one won’t either.
