Muslim School Opens in Brooklyn

September 5, 2007

Yeterday a Muslim school opened in Brooklyn. This would be no problem to me if this was a private school. but it isn’t, it is a public school.

A madrassa is a Muslim school. New York City Schools Chancellor Joe Klein stressed that the KGIA is a secular public school, and he would shut it down if it became a religious school.

How can the school be secular if it is MUSLIM, by definition it is a religious institution. If they are teaching Muslim culture, they are teaching religion. How can we let this happen. We, in this country, are no longer allowed public displays of Christianity on public property, nevermind teaching it in public schools. Yet this group is catered to at every turn.

Parents are trying through the Freedom of Information Act to find out more about the school, because there hasn’t been much information available. Parents began to become nervous when they heard about the following.

Controversy and questions about the religious ties of the school already prompted the resignation of founder and Principal Debbie Almontaser last month.

It was discovered then that she shared office space with an Islamist group that sells T-shirts encouraging New York Muslims to join an “intifada”

The term intifada is most typically associated with the attacks on Israeli Jews by Islamic radicals between 1987 and 1993, in some of the territories gained by the Israelis after the Six Day War in 1967.

What else needs to be said here? Why is it alright to teach this one religion, but no others? I can’t say anything more than I already have, you can read my previous post on this issue here.

According to what I’ve seen, I think it’s more accurate to say this is a public school that teaches English and Arabic. Most of the students enrolled are not Arabic, but wish to learn the language and study some Arabic culture. That’s what they plan teach, not Islam.

If they do intend to teach Islam, that would likely offend “separation of church and state” jurisprudence.
