Democrats are Already Trying to Discredit Petraeus’ Report for fear of Good News

September 6, 2007

Democrats, who have positioned themselves with failure in Iraq, are already beginning spin control just in case the report from General Petraeus has some good news. The sad part about the whole Iraq war political game that the Democrats are playing is the fact that good news in Iraq is bad news for Democrats. That being said they are now linking Petraeus’ report with president Bush in an effort to delegitimize it.

The top Democrats — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California — also referred to the general’s briefing as the “Bush report.”

The Bush report?” Senate Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin said when asked about the upcoming report from Gen. Petraeus, U.S. commander in Iraq.

“We know what is going to be in it. It’s clear. I think the president’s trip over to Iraq makes it very obvious,” the Illinois Democrat said. “I expect the Bush report to say, ‘The surge is working. Let’s have more of the same.’ “

  And:

“We will see what the Bush report will be at the end of next week,” Mrs. Pelosi said. “The facts are self-evident that the progress is not being made. They might want to find one or two places where there has been progress but the plural of anecdote is not data.”

There you have it, the Democrats have dubbed Petraeus’ report as the Bush report. To me this seems very disrespectful to the general that the Democrat controlled congress approved to the job knowing he supported the troop surge.

This strategy was met with sceptism and from Republicans.

Republicans bristled at the pre-emptive strike against the report.

“Are these leaders asking the American people to believe that the testimony of a commanding four-star general in the U.S. Army should be discarded before it’s even delivered?” said Brian Kennedy, spokesman for House Minority Leader John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican.

“If so, these statements completely ignore what’s truly at stake in this war and suggest that neither the commander in chief nor our chief commander on the ground have any regard for the lives of the men and women fighting for this country,” he said. “It’s appallng, and I think the American people — rightfully — will continue to stick by the decisions of our commanders and troops on the ground when it comes to what is best for their safety and security.”

Here is my feeling on this. If the Democrats really believe that Petraeus’ report is nothing more than the Bush report, and they believe Bush is wrong, CUT OFF FUNDING IMMEDIATELY. If they believe this is nothing but lies and spin and they do nothing, then the blood of our soldiers is on them. Why wait to cut off funding if they think the report if false? If they really believed this they would bring our soldiers home now. The fact is they know that the surge is working, yet they have to oppose it to appease their base. See what appeasement gets you?

I’m still not entirely clear what the silly phrase “the surge is working” really means.

It means that violence is down since the surge began. It means that the insurgents who were fighting against us have joined us.

Just curious, would you find the phrase silly if it was “the surge has failed” if we hadn’t seen any results?

I think it’s silly in the context of how much political weight has been attached to it. So, yea, it’s silly either way.

If the Dems have a political interest in the surge not working, as you say, could it also be said that the repubs have an interest in keeping the troops there, no matter how hopeless the situation?

I think that America has an interest in keeping the troops there. However I don’t think the situation is hopeless. It may be complicated and very muddied and difficult. But not hopeless.
