It’s Official: 50% Increase to Tolls in New Hampshire
Today the executive council voted 4-1 to raise the road usage tax, otherwise known as the tolls. Let’s face it tolls are a polite way of saying usage taxes. What is disappointing here is that two of the yea votes were Republican, while the one dissenting vote was Democrat. However this wouldn’t matter if liberal Democrat Governor John Lynch hadn’t been so exuberant in his support of this tax increase. He has made it known how much he would love to raise the road usage tax, and today he got his wish.
John Lynch’s new two year budget, which he called fiscally responsible, raised spending by 17.5%. But it raised much more than spending, he had to raise the money, guess where that came from. Our pockets, that’s where. He raised several fees and taxes and still couldn’t pay for the roads. The truth here is that most of the toll money raised is being diverted away from road repair, where it belongs. All the governor had to do was put the toll revenues back where they belong and no toll hikes would be necessary, but the governor is only interested in taking more of our money, so reducing government waste was not an option.
And we haven’t even heard his plan for paying for education yet. By the time Governor Lynch is done, living in Massachusetts will look like a bargain.
