Republican wins Special Election for Louisiana Governor

October 21, 2007

louisiana_governor_s_racesff_lawh117_20071021001918.jpgA Republican has won the governorship in the state of Louisiana. U.S. Rep. Bobby Jindal won the election to replace the incompetent Gov. Kathleen Blanco who was not running for re-election. While the main stream media tried to pin the lack of preparedness to help after hurricane Katrina, it was Kathleen Blanco who showed the real lack of leadership and preparedness. Governor-elect Jindal’s story seems to be an inspiring one.

U.S. Rep. Bobby Jindal became the nation’s youngest governor and the first nonwhite to hold post in Louisiana since Reconstruction when he carried more than half the vote to defeat 11 opponents.

Jindal, the Republican 36-year-old son of Indian immigrants, had 53 percent with 625,036 votes with about 92 percent of the vote tallied. It was more than enough to win Saturday’s election outright and avoid a Nov. 17 runoff.

“My mom and dad came to this country in pursuit of the American dream. And guess what happened. They found the American Dream to be alive and well right here in Louisiana,” he said to cheers and applause at his victory party.

His parents came here the LEGAL way and made something of themselves. They didn’t have it handed to them. When all we here about is how these immigrants and poor people can’t get ahead on their own and they need government help, this proves otherwise. Anyone willing to work hard can get ahead and make something out of themselves and I am tired of hearing the Democrats bash this country day in and day out.

Political analysts said Jindal built up support as a sort of “buyer’s remorse” from people who voted for Blanco last time and had second thoughts about that decision. Blanco was widely criticized for the state’s response to Hurricane Katrina and she announced months ago that she would not seek re-election.

“I think the Jindal camp, almost explicitly, (wanted) to cast it this way: If you were able to revote, who would you vote for?” said Pearson Cross, a University of Louisiana at Lafayette political scientist.

While this may only be one Republican victory it is a start and we can hope that this small trend continues. I am not willing to concede the fact that a Democrat will win the election in ’08. The media likes to forecast how many governor seats the Republicans will lose, well here is one that they won, let’s see how newsworthy it is deemed.

Louisiana has the first Democrat to fall, now I can hope that New Hampshire has the next one.

By the way, what I didn’t understand is why was this a special election. There were 12 candidates and it was held in October. What am I missing or is this just Louisiana’s screwed up way of having elections?

I’m not sure why they did it that way instead of waiting until November.
