Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta Mulls a Run for New Hampshire Governor

January 24, 2008

Manchester mayor Frank Guinta is mulling a run for governor. Frank Guinta was dubbed by NHGOP chairman Fergus Cullen as the last Republican standing after the 2006 elections that saw Democrats in New Hampshire win over most seats and take control over every branch of state government.

Guinta seized upon Governor John Lynch’s state of the state address to promise fiscal restraint. He also decided to form a political action committee to begin raising money for a possible run. He made this decision after hearing about New Hampshire’s budget woes because of the out of control spending by the New Hampshire legislature.

“having worked on budgets and having listened to legislative leaders,” is not surprised “that over-inflated revenue estimates and runaway spending has gotten us into a deficit situation.”

There are also rumors of a couple of others who may be planning to run on the Republican side. I think their is a perceived weakness to Governor John Lynch right now and Republicans are anxious to try to pounce on it. In 2006 the Republicans fielded a sacrificial lamb in Jim Coburn, who had no shot at winning, this year they feel as though they can regain the governorship.

It is widely believed that the New Hampshire GOP has to field a strong candidate this year to also help save Senator John Sununu’s job. If they don’t it could mean the election of Jeanne Shaheen to the United States senate. The same Jeanne Shaheen that instituted the statewide property tax. The same Jeanne Shaheen whose husband had to resign in disgrace as Hillary Clintons national co-chair because of his despicable remark about possible cocaine dealing by Barack Obama.

The state race is beginning to heat up, hopefully it will be a good year for the Republicans and we can turn New Hampshire back into the independent minded thinkers we once were.
