Democrat Voters will not Decide who Their Nominee is

March 6, 2008

This is a topic that I heard as I was listening to talk radio yesterday, and that is that the Democrat voters will not be deciding who the Democrat nominee is. This is something that has been speculated on for quite a while now. But last week’s primary virtually ensured it. The math just doesn’t add up. Sure Hillary achieved a victory of sorts by winning Texas and Ohio, but she gained very little delegate wise,  she did however gain enough delegates to make it virtually impossible for either candidate to have enough delegates to win the nomination before the convention.

Here is a quick look at the math, as I heard it described on Boston talk radio:

Obama needs about 77% of the remaining delegates to clinch the nomination, to be honest I forget the actual percentage but it was in the upper 70’s and I am pretty sure it was 77%, the actual number is fairly irrelevant you can call it 70% if you want, while Hillary Clinton needs 94% to clinch the nomination before the convention.

Considering the fact that the largest margin of victory a candidate is likely to have the rest of the way is by a 55%-45% margin there is no mathematical way either candidate can win the nomination before the convention. This means party insiders and higher-ups are going to decide the nominee, not the actual voters.

This has to have the party insiders up in arms even as we hear that there may be a do-over of the Florida and Michigan surely to try to take the decision out of the insider’s hands. Party insiders do not want to be on record as to their choice between two minority candidates running for the highest office in the land. They don’t have the guts to make a decision based on the issues and stick to it, they are more worried about perception.

The very fact that we may actually witness a brokered convention is very exciting to a political junkie like myself, but the prospect that a brokered convention may tear the Democrats apart, well simply put, that is erotic.

Then it shall be a fun implosion to watch.

But neither one holds a candle to the candidate that knows something about implosions and explosions all too well.
