China Drills for Oil off the Coast of Florida, America Doesn’t

June 11, 2008

This is something that has bothered me for quite a while. China has a

deal with Cuba and is drilling for oil just off of the Florida coast. Needless to say, the enviro-nazis in America will not let us drill off the coast of Florida.

Whenever I hear a conversation about the high price of oil at work and I hear the liberals I work with blame everything except the fact that we are sitting on our own oil but we aren’t allowed to touch it I start to boil inside. I usually throw out the line about how China is drilling off the coast of Florida but that the environmentalists won’t let us drill there. I am usually met with a blank stare. Naturally these people have no idea what I am talking about.

This scenario happened just yesterday to me. After I mentioned that little tidbit about China I was told that Americans need to turn down their heat in the winter. I was told that Americans feel as if it is their right to turn on every light in the house. i was told that if we just didn’t waste so much energy everything would be alright. Not in those exact words, but the point was made.

I then made the mistake of telling said liberal that America needs more nuclear plants. I figured that I could play to the environmental side of this liberal by mentioning that nuclear energy was actually one of the cleanest forms of energy available. He would have none of that.

That is why I don’t usually debate with liberals at work. That is why I usually keep to myself when it comes to politics. You can’t reason with the unreasonable.

Well somehow I have gone off on a tangent and I need to get back on topic. Where was I? Oh yeah, drilling off the coast of Florida. The point that I was trying to make before I got distracted was that while China is drilling off of our own coast most Americans don’t even seem to know, or care, that this is happening. Thankfully Republicans in the senate today brought it out in the open. Hopefully enough Americans out there who had no clue this was going on will now awaken and ask why. Why can’t we drill for oil on our coast while China can? They probably won’t though, but finally this is getting some mention.

“By prohibiting the United States from taking part in the same type of energy exploration that the Chinese are conducting just miles off our shores, the Democratic Majority on Capitol Hill continues to prove itself complicit in an energy crisis that has saddled American families and small businesses with gas prices that have reached $4.05 per gallon today,” the news release said.“Do congressional Democrats actually believe China has more ingenuity and more concern for the environment than the United States?” Republicans asked.
That last sentence hits the nail on the head. Do the environmentalists actually believe that China is more friendly to the environment then we are? There is already drilling going on there, if we drill it will not impact the environment any more than China is with their lax environmental standards.

Finally this is being brought to light, the problem is that most people don’t even realize what is going on. Most people don’t seem to pay attention other than to bitch about the price of oil. We are sitting on more black gold than we can shake a stick at, but shaking a stick at it is all we are allowed to do. The oil just sits there off the coast of Florida waiting for someone to come and get it but the only ones who get it are the Chinese.

You might want to talk to the Republican governors of Florida (past and present) about drilling just off their tourism-dollar-generating beaches.

For that matter, you may also want to ask yourself why you’d even want to continue drilling for new oil wells when we all know oil’s going to dry up eventually.

Why not be at the forefront of investing (and inventing) in new forms of energy? America has a great legacy of invention and the potential profits from being at the forefront of the new energy frontier would be huge, and lasting.

I am as pissed off at this as you are. I have blogged about it on my site. Good read if I do say so myself.

I cannot seem to talk to people around my office about what GOOD is happening in Iraq.

China more friendly to WHAT? Yeah, that’s why people walk around Beijing with breathing masks on. Can’t wait to see the olympics. I have no interest, but I’ll watch just to see the 10x worse that LA haze.

    Oops.

Turns out this urban legend is actually not true. Not in the least.

Apparently conservative columnist George Will made it up, and former oil man V.P. Dick Cheney repeated it without bothering to check.

Republican Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida says there are no Chinese oil rigs off the coast of Cuba.

Mr. Pink Eyes, you should print a retraction lest you end up looking like a fool at the hands of an overzealous vice president. 😉

Been out of action for a little while – sorry. Love the new look. Tell me, how can I get the link list on the bottom of your posts? And the digg on the right giving the listing?

Now, on the post. I agree (odd). My concern is that we continue to put new regulations and limitations on western companies, but nothing to those from less regulated countries and especially not on the no-name brand companies. This makes it difficult for companies to compete. Either everyone needs the same limitations globally or nothing at all.

Thanks AA, the new look was kind of an accident. I was fooling around with the idea of using the constitution in my header and I wanted to preview what it would look like, even though it was incomplete. I thought that I was just previewing my new header but I actually changed my header image. I didn’t have my old image on the computer anymore so I couldn’t change it back. So I had to come up with another image and I created this one.

The related links list at the bottom of my posts was a feature that was added by wordpress, it just appeared one day. I just did a search and I found a site called sphere.com that is supposed to add this feature to posts. Maybe that will work for you.

As for the digg icon, are you a member of digg? If not, sign up for digg. What I do is submit my posts to digg. After the post is submitted you have to wait a few minutes, then go to your profile. Once the post appears in your profile you can click on the digg icon next to that post. This will take you to the digg page for that post. Copy the URL that appears in your address bar. Now you have to edit your post by typing the following where you want it to appear:

[digg=paste the URL from digg here]

Include the brackets. Save the changes. That is how to do it with wordpress, I hope that will work for you also. I also hope that what I typed makes sense.

By the way, I got those Red Sox tickets! I will be in Boston on July 12th, I am holding you to that beer offer. It is a night game so I am hoping we can meet up. Let me know.

You make a great point about putting regualtions and limitations on western companies while other countries have little or no regulations for their companies.
I think it also applies to the global warming issue. We are already ahead of other countries when it comes to bieng environmentally friendly yet we seem to be blamed the most for global warming.

Rob N, I don’t need the vice president to make me look foolish, I do just fine by myself. 🙂
I am not going to retract my post, I linked to my source, you linked to a source. Perhaps my source is true while your’s isn’t.
I am not against finding alternative forms of energy, but I still would like to take advantage of the resources that we are sitting on in our own backyard.

    Mr. Pink,

I suggest you look at Google Earth.

There are no drills from China off the coast of Cuba.

If your source is wrong it’s wrong. Be a man and admit it.

Or, if you choose to believe in things that are blatantly wrong then that is your 1A right just as it is my 1A right (and responsibility) to point out your error. Note, however, that your continued promotion of an error, once it’s been pointed out to you, means you are a liar since you’re choosing to continue to knowingly and willfully promote false information.

You’re on for the 12th! Might be going to a game on the 25th. Got tickets via work, but now have to be in China that week. Between you and me – I am trying to NOT get a visa so I can go to the game instead. Maybe I should email them my blogs about China!

Sorry about that AA. I use a program called get social that was created for wordpress blogs. Here is the link:

    Get Social

First you have to post your article, then you can open the get social program. get social will ask you to enter the title of the post and then the hyperlink. I just copy the hyperlink from my blog post. You will then have four options about how you would like the link bar to appear. Once you chose an option, get social will provide you with a code to insert into you post.
Next you will have to edit your post and add the text provided. I think this must be done in html mode, not visual mode. Save the changes and you are done.

It is a little time consuming but it isn’t bad. I believe I saw that your blog was hosted by wordpress, if not maybe it will still work.

What’s the best way to contact you about the 12th? The game is at seven so we should be able to meet in the afternoon.

Why let a few facts get in the way of a good story! If you want somebody to attach blame to, focus your ire on the oil companies. Lest we forget abvout the Exxon Valdez disaster, the oil companies in their infinate wisdom and everlasting greed have been selling Alskan oil on the world market, about 95% of it to the Pacific rimm- China, (south) Korea, Taiwan, Japan. Why, because they can sell it prevailing world prices, instead of the $40-60. 00/barrel if it were used domestically.

As to Nuclear energy, how doe dispose of the spent fuel. Many state governments will not allow the spent fuel to be transported within or through their states because of the inherent danger. So the reacter operators just store it on their property and it continues to build up and up and up. The fed governm, ent built a storage faciiity in a salt mine out west, but that is just geography.

If we applied the same ambition to finding and perfecting non-polluting energy sources that we did to the personal computer, every building would have solar or wind backed up by or energy storage system or fuel cells and cars would all be on fuel cells or bio-fuel made from sugar cane waste or switch grass. But that would mean the oil companies would have the multi-billion dollar strangle hold on us. But again, Why let a few facts get in the way of a good story!

I’m said liberal.. but for me it has nothing to do with environment brother.

    1. More dems, including Sen. Obama, are very open to Nuclear energy. It’s an obvious part of our future. Your lib friends at work aren’t lib dumb, they are just dumb.

    2. Don’t blame liberals my friend, when Bush, Jeb Bush, and past Gov’s of Fla and California have been against offshore drilling. Why? Easy. It’s not about environment my man, it’s about economics and elections. Wait for that first spill, then watch economies drain from tourist revenues and bad press. Also watch how quickly Republicans get burned in local elections.. Whether it’s pure perception, doesn’t matter. Perception = reality.

    3. Last, if I found 10 billion barrels of oil under my house I’d sell it. But it wouldn’t solve the crisis. It takes at least several years, up to 10-20 years, before you get full production. Then, billions worth of machines, salaries, land deals, where do you think all that cost is going? Do you think the oil companies are going to do that for free and give us lollypops afterwards? Nope. They’ll charge it all back. How? price of refined oil. It’s no solution my friend. Not to mention, how long would it last? we consume 20 mill barrels, and there are 10+ mil barrels in ANWR. That comes out to, 1.5 years. If you supplement it though as others suggest, using only 10% stretching it out.. how much is 10% off $4-5.00/ gallon? And considering, that 10% is not free.. remember the cost to drill and refine from above. It’s a big waste of time.

    1. force consumers to pay dumb tax on gas guzzlers
    2. build nuclear plants/energy
    3. subsidize econo cars for people, so we could afford

I heard of this too and am unsure of why we are not drilling there either? Well, being a news hound and looking for truth & putting the BS & name calling to the republicans. I was listening to a speach McCain made w while ago regarding off shore drilling and drilling in the Everglades in Fla,’s game reserve. The message Is “NO DRILLING THERE” & this is your Hero! So STOP the Nazi names and the rest of the pointing fingers and Blame game & Check your FACTS!!

Why hasn’t Bushy do NOTHING to “Jawbone” the Arabs to lower the price of oil, and hold the weapons that he just sold these Money hogs and Just SAY NO cheap Oil, No Cheap Weapons!!!! That sounds like the thing he told Clinton to do! As the arabs said Bush is a Failed President & Lousey speach maker!
McCain is more of the same INSANE Myoptic views of Bush!

Well said sir. There is absolutely no reason why we should not be tapping into our own oil. I guess liberals have never heard the phrase “Every little bit helps.” It irritates me to no end that we refuse to help ourselves, because of the farce that is “global warming.”

Has it ever occurred to anyone that before you drill you have to explore?
The Cubans have given rights to the Chinese, the Brazilians, etc to EXPLORE for oil. If they find some and it is cost effective to pull it out of the ocean, they will drill next. The point is that we are not even allowed to EXPLORE for fear that something might go wrong. My question is, whom would you rather trust? Our technology or the Chinese’s, Brazilian’s, Etc. especially when they are drilling in our back yard? The oil slicks after a hurricane will not stop at the Cuban shores if something goes wrong. Am I off base or is this just too logical for the libs to comprehend?
