Democrats Poised to Attack the Freedom of the Press

July 31, 2008

Once Democrats get their 60 vote majority after the November election one of the first things that they are going to do is to go after the freedom of the press. Here is the first amendment:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press (emphasis mine); or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Yet abridging the freedom of the press is exactly what the Democrats plan to do by reinstating the fairness doctrine which was repealed under Ronald Reagan.

Democrats claim that talk radio is unfair because it is mainly conservative. They are right, it is mainly conservative. But so what? Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of the press means congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of the press. It is cut and dry, there is no debate about this yet congress is poised to do just that. They claim talk radio isn’t fair, but so what? Nowhere does it say that the media has to be fair, only that it cannot be abridged. Ask George Bush if the media is fair.

“Obviously, if one group, or a large group, controls information and only allows one perspective to be presented, that’s not good for democracy. That is not good for the American public. That is, of course, what the Fairness Doctrine is directed at, and it can have great merit.

Maybe if liberal talk radio was interesting it wouldn’t be so one sided. The liberals already dominate the print and electronic media but that isn’t good enough. There is no fairness doctrine for television or newspapers, yet the one form of media that favors conservatism must be shut down.

Whether you are a liberal or a conservative you should see how dangerous this is. Letting the government control the media is a direct violation of the first amendment, but then again since when did liberals care about the constitution?

The article you linked to is about a Republican introducing a bill to prohibit the fairness doctrine from returning not a Democrat trying to introduce a fairness doctrine bill.

The constitutionality of the fairness doctrine is a bit murky. The fairness doctrine has been in and out of the Supreme Court many times and some of these courts decided that it is constitutional and others decided that it is unconstituitional. Look it up on Wikipedia for more info.
Either way, if the Democrats decide to try to reintroduce the fairness doctrine, the Supreme court will have the final say in the matter, not congress. So don’t worry about it.

Personally, I can’t tell if the fairness doctrine is constitutional or not, but the most recent supreme court decision on the issue decided that it is not constitutional, so I’m happy to just go along with that decision. It’s not my business if people want to be lied to by Limbaugh without a voice of reason to call him out on his BS.

Its funny that you quote the first amendment considering that, traditionally, Republicans find just about every other portion of this ammendment to be worth discarding, including freedom of the press. (school prayer, flag burning, profanity, “free speech zones” )
