Two-Thirds of Iraq now Under Local Control
With the recent turnover to the Iraqis of Wasit province by the United States government two-thirds of Iraq is now under local control.
Political progress continued to gain momentum in Iraq this month with the U.S. military transferring authority to local officials in the Wasit and Babil Provinces.
Wasit was transferred on Wednesday and Babil was transferred on October 23.
That means 13 out of 18 provinces, two-thirds of the country, have been turned over to local authorities.
Meanwhile Barack Obama bitterly clings to the notionthat the surge has failed because political reconciliation hasn’t been reached. He continues to ignore the facts for political reasons. He is not alone on the left with this belief.
Some congressional critics of the Bush administration claim that even as the U.S. military has succeeded in expelling al Qaeda, the Iraqi government has not fulfilled its obligations. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) made this point in response to a question from CNSNews.com earlier this year.
“The purpose of the surge,” which started in January 2007, “was to create a secure period of time so the government of Iraq would have political room to take actions that would bring [political] reconciliation to Iraq,”
Once it became clear that the surge was successful Democrats who predicted it would fail began to alter what the goal of the surge was. Suddenly the goal, in their minds, became the political reconciliation of Iraq. But that was not the goal and people know this and see through this.
“This has been the fallback position for those who did not support the pursuit of victory in Iraq,” Captain Pete Hegseth, chairman of Vets for Freedom (VFF), said in an interview. “They are on the record as saying that this [the surge] would not work and now that it has they continue to back peddle and say that there has been no political progress when it is no longer plausible to say so.”
Even if we humor the left and for the sake of argument agree that the goal of the surge was political reconciliation, as the quote above states they are no longer able to claim the surge failed. Political gains have been made in most of Iraq and will continue to be until we can bring the troops home in victory.

Of course what the Republicans fail to mention is that the Surge was just one part of some very important activities in the region. The Anbar Awakening for one and the fact that we started paying people money not to fight. We have been bankrolling the peace and the upswing of troops “the surge” was a component, not the solution.
Iraq will go down as the worst ideological war ever propogated by one man’s revenge. It is a shame that the American People have not bee in more uproar over the fact that our own people have died to satisfy Bush’s Daddy complex.
I truly hope that those who have died can forgive us for killing them for now reason.
If we truly were the police of the world as Bush and his Neocons believe we would be overthrowing more governments left and right. They cannot honestly believe that Saddam was the worst dictator in the world when it was us who shored him up all those years in the Iraq/Iranian war.
The surge is a tactic. It is a tactic that we employed because our overall strategy was flawed and not thought out in the slightest.
