American Express Hops on the Bailout Bandwagon

November 11, 2008

And on and on it goes with this bailout fiasco. American Express has filed for and was granted approval to be listed as a commercial bank. Not only were they approved but the whole process was fast-tracked and the 30 day waiting period was waved by the federal government.

Why did American Express file a request to be listed as a commercial bank? The answer is simple, they were not going to receive any money from this horrible bailout bill that the taxpayers have been burdened with, now they can apply to hop on the bailout bandwagon gravy train.

American Express Co. won U.S. Federal Reserve approval to become a commercial bank, gaining access to government funds as credit-card defaults climb with economies slowing around the world.

Here is what American Express’ CEO had to say about the decision:

Given the continued volatility in the financial markets, we want to be best positioned to take advantage of the various programs the federal government has introduced

Take advantage of? He couldn’t have made that point any more clearer. American Express is not only “taking advantage of” the programs that the government has implemented, American Express is “taking advantage of” the taxpayers. As companies line up to steal from the taxpayers one has to wonder who will be next and where will it stop?

Ugh! Once again we need to stop giving handouts. Did you see that AIG is requesting another 40 Billion? They also just had another tax payer paid for vacation for their workers in Arizona this time.

We got to get off this bailout business.

I know for a fact that American Express will be using this “bailout” (i.e.your money as a taxpayer) to offshore US jobs to India. It is already happening. Indians are willing to work 20 hrs a day with no benefits for $5 a day. American Express will post a job in India, and literally hundreds of people will post for the one job. It is insane. There is nothing “American” about this company anymore. I expect Ken Chenault to jump ship (either voluntarily or involuntarily) any day now.

I am an employee of AMEX and I have to say that I am embarassed by this. A few months ago the higher ups said that they wered decentralizing non phone services because of 9-11 and the risk of having services in one area, they told their employees that it was not a cost cutting measure. Last August they said that we could not buy more than a certain amount of company stock to protect us against an Enron situation, 2 months later they gave Ken Chenault 1.25 million shares and in January another 1.3 million shares. Now this may be politically incorrect, but I think the only reason that AMEX is keeping the CEO is because he is black and it shows how diverse the company is and Chenault knows it and will milk the company for everything he can get. Maybe they should outsource the CEO position to India and save 50-75 million dollars in the process and lets not forget about AMEX bigwigs flying to meetings on the company jet with a stewardess because they cant mix their own drinks while the people who volunteered to go to India (and sacrifice 2 months of family life to help) have to fly coach.
