Why Does President Obama Need GOP Support for His Stimulus Bill

January 27, 2009

The media, President Obama, and the Democrats have all claimed that the president needs GOP approval of his stimulus package. We are told that without broad bipartisan support the bill will be perceived as a loss for President Obama, even if it passes. Why is it that President Obama needs the support of the GOP for his stimulus package?

The truth is that President Obama does not need the support of the GOP to pass his stimulus bill. He has the votes without the Republicans. He has a Democrat majority in the house and senate, he can do almost anything that he wants to. Why then is he so interested in getting their vote? Why is he pressing them so hard for their support when he should already have the votes that he needs?

I feel there are two possible reasons why President Obama want a majority of Republican names on this bill.

The first possible reason is just to show bipartisanship. He ran as the candidate who will unite the country, bring change to Washington, and end the partisan bickering. If Obama fails to include in his stimulus bill provisions that make the bill more palatable to Republicans he will have failed to do all of the above on his very first effort. It is purely a PR type of move.

The second reason is blame distribution. Nobody knows if this plan will work and now the spin from the Obama administration is that this bill is about investing in our future, not job creation. Already he is backing down from his claim that this plan will create jobs.

Because none of the so-called experts can tell Obama and his administration for certain that this bill will have any positive effect on the economy they don’t want to be alone if this stimulus bill doesn’t stimulate. President Obama and the Democrats are scared to death that if this bill fails and there are only Democrat names on the bill they will take the blame solely on their shoulders. Rightly so.

So they are looking to recruit Republicans to their side on the stimulus package to “redistribute the blame” if it fails. If Republicans are smart they will stay away from this bill.

Because, and don’t ask me why, Obama still believes that Republicans can be more than a bunch of self-serving whinners …

From share the wealth to share the blame, eh?
It’s really a no lose situation for the Obamatards, please excuse the possible contradiction of implying that they are both clever and retarded. If the bill fails, and it certainly will fail to financially stimulate anyone except the special interest groups that it targets, then the Obamaphiles can lay blame on the conservatives by indicating that the bill failed due to their lack of support. If he gets their support then he can still blame the conservatives, or at least share the blame. It will actually be better for Obama if the right does not support the bill, he can then blame them for it’s failure and accuse them of being divisive while he “Tried his best to unite the parties”.
    Brilliant!
And do I need to point out the hypocrisy of gilmour’s comment? Isn’t “self serving whinners”(sic) the true definition of the liberal victims of the left? Isn’t that the party platform that got The One elected? Na, couldn’t be.
Keep up the good work Mr. Pinkeyes.

Obama IS PR. If you look at the lack of experience he has, coupled with the baggage, and the fact that most Americans know little about it, you see an overwelmingly powerful PR machine. In this move, he accomplishes both of your points, by reaching across the aisle. Should the stimlus fail, “we all are to blame”, not just those who elected Obama. Masterful PR machine at work that has not stopped and will not stop.

Obama is a great president. His presence is impacting grants like no other president prior. Grant funding for minorities and middle class have increased nearly 10,000% in the past week. I’ve filed for all of my grants, have you? Don’t miss out before it’s all gone!

Thanks whiteamericanpatriot, and yes Gilmour did perfectly describe the entitlement left and the victimization policies of the left. I wasn’t going to mention it, but seeing how you brought it up…..:)

You make great points Loudelf, with the lack of knowledge most people have concerning Obama’s “friends” he must have one hell of a PR machine. How the hell are we supposed to stop him?

Is it possible, Mr. Pink Eyes, that not all democrats are backing this stimulus plan? I read somewhere today that some democrat was voting against it. Just wondering.

I am sure there will be a few Democrats who vote against it but I don’t think that there is any way that this bill doesn’t get passed.

The pictures you paint don’t neccessarily represent the ones you criticize … but rather your own absurdities and made up reality …

he definitely needs GOP support. in the event og the stimulus bill’s failure, obama can point to the GOP as part of the failure. he is likely to say that “the GOP can’t blame us for the massive stimulus bill failure because you voted for it too.”
