Obama May Hold GITMO Detainees Indefinitely and Without Trial
I thought that one of the reasons that the president signed the executive order to close GITMO was because the detainees there were being held indefinitely and without trial. I must have been wrong because the president is considering holding the GITMO detainees indefinitely and without trial; just not in GITMO. He is considering bringing them to the United State where he will then continue the Bush administration’s policies.
If the president is going to continue the Bush administration’s policies of holding prisoners indefinitely and suspending habeas corpus, what does it matter where these people are being held? Why remove them from GITMO if you are only going to continue to treat them the same way? Keep them in GITMO and off of United States soil.
another indication of President Barack Obama’s struggles to establish his counter-terrorism policies, balancing security concerns against attempts to alter Bush-administration practices he has harshly criticized
“Balancing security concerns against attempts to alter Bush-administration practices.”
Isn’t that statement a confession that the Bush administration’s policies were effective and kept Americans safe? If there is a balance to be struck between “balancing security concerns” and “altering Bush administration policies” than I would say that yes, this is an admission that Bush’s policies were effective. Which is why the current president is planning to continue Bush’s policies, even if it is in a different location.

Also note that keeping Gitmo prisoners indefinitely and without trial was one of the reasons given for calling Bush a fascist. Looks like on some things Mr. Change is picking up where junior left off.

Did you just call Obama a fascist?
I know that you didn’t but your comment touches on a point that I have been trying to make. Obama has continued several of Bush’s foreign policies, policies that he ran against in the campaign, but he seems to be getting a free pass.

Bah… I’m just trying to point out that some of the things that he is doing got Bush called a fascist. As you mention, he is getting a free pass. Maybe I should have left out at the jab on the promises of “change”.

Just another perfect example of “The One” saying whatever would win him support and get him elected. As I believe you have pointed out before Steve, either he was sincere in his promise to shut down GITMO and free the detainees but just too short sighted and naive in his arrogance to think it through properly OR he just plain lied to get support.
Either way, I wonder how his sheep feel about The Chosen One now. And I wonder just how far some of the more faithful ones will go to justify and make excuses for the most inexperienced leader in the world.

I really don’t think that GITMO is going to close. I think it was a PR move and eventually he will say that he just couldn’t close it, but he tries real hard. He will then use his line of “don’t blame me, I didn’t open GITMO.”
It is going to be real interesting to see how his supporters justify his continuing some of Bush’s policies.

I don’t think it will close, either. It now seems that he may not have the “it’s not my fault” thing to fall back on and he is saying all different things to try and confuse everyone. You know, the old razzle dazzle—- presto–chango!!!!!
