United States Hands Over Control of Iraqi Cities to Iraqis

In what should be the biggest news of the day the United States has turned over control of the cities in Iraq to the Iraqi people. Here is what an adviser to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki had to say about this momentous event:

The withdrawal of American troops is completed now from all cities after everything they sacrificed for the sake of security,” said Sadiq al-Rikabi, we are now celebrating the restoration of sovereignty.

Today has been declared a national holiday called “National Sovereignty Day” and Iraqi’s are dancing in the streets and fireworks are lighting the sky.

Today is a great day in Iraq and it is a day that many of us knew would get here. Sure it took longer than we had hoped but in the end the United States military was successful. I never doubted that they would be.

Through hard work and dedication, even with mounting displeasure at home and in the media, the United States military did what they always do when they are allowed to– prevail.

The fighting is over but the job is not done and the military will be in Iraq for years to come but on this day the United States military deserves a heartfelt thank you from not only the Iraqis but also from the citizens of the United States–thank you.

Thanks to the military and a very special thank you to President Bush, who stood virtually alone in Washington and more than any other single person brought us to this point. Thank you sir!

President Bush should be comended for doing what he thought was right even in the face of harsh criticism.
In a way Obama has justified President Bush by sticking to many of Bush’s policies on the war including this timetable. (Funny how Obama isn’t getting crticisized the way Bush did even though he is conducting the war using Bush’s policies, isn’t it?)
