Two million protesters descend on Washington to oppose Barack Obama’s spending
I have several questions for those in the media and the far left politicians who claim that the Tea Party and Town Hall protests are nothing but an illegitimate astroturf movement that has been hired by the right.
Do you still think that the protesters are nothing but a bunch of hired guns of the right wing? Do you still think that we are illegitimate? Do you still think that we are nothing but racists who just oppose a black man in the White House and not his policies? Do you still think that we are just a few radicals? Do you still think that we are a joke and should not be taken seriously? Are you still laughing?
If you do still think that this is not a legitimate protest and that we are not to be taken seriously than you are nothing more that a fool. We proved today that the opposition movement is real and we have been heard from.
Today protesters took to the streets of Washington to protest the president and it has been estimated that two million people attended today’s event. These protesters wanted to voice their concerns with the president’s outrageous spending, the increasing government intrusions, and healthcare reform proposal. I applaud everyone who took the time out of their busy lives to stand up and fight for the country that we believe in.
We have been marinalized and trivialized by the media and politicians who in reality fear us but today we showed America and the world that we are not just a fringe group. We showed today that we are legitimate. We showed Washington what a real protest looks like.
While the anti-war movement and protesters the likes of Cindy Sheehan over the last several years have received widespread media coverage as support for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars crumbled the truth is that those protests failed to even come close to the representation that amassed on Washington today.
Today we saw what a real protest looked like and the politicians in Washington had damn well better be paying attention to us. We are not a joke. You were laughing at us back in April when the first protests took place but you are no longer laughing. We are real, average, everyday Americans and we are pissed off and we are telling you that enough is enough. You better listen to us now or you will be in the unemployment line next year along with an ever increasing amount of those very same real, average, everyday Americans that you pretend to represent.
The president recently said that the time for bickering is over and he is right, it is time for the president to stop lecturing us, it is time for him to stop telling us what he is doing is for our own good, it is time for the president to stop bickering with the American people. But most of all it is time for the president to remember that we hired him, he works for us and it is time for him to follow the will of those that hired him. We showed him our will today and he had better be paying attention.

Mr. PE,
Great post. The images of yesterdays rally are very empowering to me as an American. As many as 2 million patriots coming together for action. Wow! Our Founding Fathers would be proud.
What actions/reactions do think will come from our politicians following this march? Will they take us seriously and really listen to what we’re saying? Or just write us off as just a bunch of right wing nut-jobs?
Will a sense of even more urgency be apparent within the admin, with health care reform, immigration reform, gun control etc. being pushed though at an escalated pace before it’s too late?
Keep up the good work. Always enjoys your posts.

Thnk you for the compliments. I think that the politicians will listen to us, at least those in the house of representatives. They will have no choice if they want to keep their jobs. I also think that many senators are paying close attention. The only question remaining is whether the president will push even harder to pass this bill with no support of the Republicans in an effort to get it done before it is too late. That last one is the million dollar question, but if the people continue to get louder I don’t see how enough senators will be able to ignore us. It is vital that we keep the pressure on!

We can take our government back, but as abolitionist Wendell Phillips famously said, “eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.”

I have heard numbers from 300K to 2M, I wish we had a really accurate count..
I like the 2M number, a lot, but I am holding off on ANY number in hopes that there is some *official* count soon…

2 million? Hardly. Even Fox can’t stomach that much of an exaggeration:

This has to be the first time i’ve seen the wingers taking cues from Democratic leadership in the House.
You want to see 2 million, look at pictures from the inauguration. Heck, the Obama rally in St Louis during the election was only 100K, and i’ve yet to see a photo of Saturday that looks like this many people (from that rally):

If the number turns out lower than what I have read it is still a significant turnout. Far better than any of the anti-war protest that the left manged over the last several years where even protest of 25 people in front of Bush house in Texas drew wide range media coverage. This was what a real protest by real disgruntled Americans looks like. The actual number is irrelevent when you see the pistures of how large the crowd was.

That is true. From the pics I have seen of Pennsylvania Ave and elsewhere, I would guesstimate 100K -200K, still very significant and much more than the 30K the organizers said they were expecting.
One thing I don’t get. From what I understand, this started as an organization of Glenn Beck’s 9/12 project.
While I’m sure there was a great sense of community and standing together among those folks there, from the coverage I’ve seen, I’d imagine a good portion of the folks who voted for and elected our current president weren’t feeling a whole lot of unity with the protesters. I know a poster of my elected Commander in Chief with a Hitler mustache and signs calling him a tyrant aren’t exactly restoring in me that same 9/12 feeling I had. In fact, its pretty much just about the opposite effect, and making me feel that our divisions within this country are greater than ever, and that a good number of people must have some sort of world view that is wholly incompatible with my own.
A protest I can understand. The over-the-top rhetoric is to be expected (gotta whip up the troops, we on the left did the same during the Bush years). But to cloak it in the guise of promoting a spirit of unity and patriotism in all Americans is just pure falsehood, when a good portion (maybe a majority) of us think it’s wrong.

Washington police estimated 1.2 million and that was early in the day, just after noon, so 2 million might be a little high, but 1 and 1/2 is likely.
This might be enough to peel a few democrats away from the administration, especially the blue dogs, but maybe even more than them.

No matter what the actual number was this was a large protest and I think that a message was sent loud and clear.
