Senate votes to move healthcare reform bill forward to debate

November 21, 2009

Just moments ago the senate voted for cloture in the healthcare reform bill sending it ot the senate floor for debate. The vote passed 60-39. It is now inevitable that this bill will become law.

Conservative and moderate Democrats, such as Ben Nelson, who claimed to harbor doubts about the bill in the end fell in line with party leaders and voted to send this bill forward. These politicians who claimed that they would oppose the legislation only to vote in favor of it will use the excuse that this is just a procedural vote and while that is partly true it is not entirely true. 97% of all bills that move to the floor are passed so everyone who voted in favor of this legislation have in fact voted for its eventual passage.

No longer can we take any of these supposed moderate or conservative Democrats seriously, they have let us down once again. Today is only the first step towards senate passage but the fate of the bill in now ensured– it will pass.

The time for those who profess reservations in this bill to act on those reservations was before the bill made it to the floor. They could have killed the bill and then negotiated the points that they pretended they were at odds with but instead they moved the bill forward with those points intact.

In the end this bill will pass, but at least we have now confirmed that we cannot trust these so-called moderate and conservative Democrats to act on what they claimed they believe in. They ran as conservative to moderate Democrats and they were elected as conservative to moderate Democrats but today they proved that they are just ordinary liberal Democrats. They let down their constituents and they let down America.

Sad to say, but I am afraid you may be right. There is virtually no chance this legislation can be defeated. The only thing in question now is what the version that reaches Obama’s desk will look like. Right now, the scope of what they are trying to do simply boggles my mind.

The only thing that may save it is if Senators such as Joe Lieberman and Ben Nelson dislike the final version enough to help a filibuster.

We just have to hope the final bill is as benign as possible. We can’t trust Nelson or Lieberman any more.
