Reverend claims that abortion is a God given right

December 3, 2009

Recently in Washington DC there was a pro-choice rally to protest the Stupac amendment– which prohibits the federal funding of abortion. One of the featured speakers was Rev. Carlton Veazey, the president of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.  Here is what the reverend had to say:

Don’t let anybody tell you that religious people don’t support choice,” Veazey said at the gathering in the Dirksen Senate Office Building. “You not only have a constitutional right for abortion, but you have a God-given right

Putting aside the fallacy that the right to an abortion appears anywhere in the constitution, does anybody really believe that God would condone a person’s right to kill an unborn baby? This statement would appear to me to be at odds with the teachings of the church and is a little stunning coming from somebody who calls himself a reverend.

The Declaration of Independence does state that the Creator endowed the people with certain rights, and among those rights are LIFE, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. But somehow this reverend missed the “life” portion of the declaration and has inserted abortion into the mix.

The protestors at this event were protesting the Stupak amendment; this amendment in no way restricts the “God given right” of abortion. It simply does not allow federal funding of abortions. Any women who wants an abortion can still get one, she will just have to pay for it herself. What a novel idea that is– making a person pay for the services they choose to use.

The pro-choice crowd is distorting this issue; they are purposely making the Stupak amendment an indictment on abortion when that is not the intent of the amendment. They are doing this purposely to drum up support for federal funding of abortions. By portraying the Stupak amendment as an attack on the “God given right” of abortion they are hoping to gain support from those pro-choice people who have no idea what the Stupak amendment is or what it represents.

Let me see now, the good Reverend says there is a God-given right to abortion? That’s about as silly as anything I have heard yet in favor of killing unborn children.

You said a mouthful when you said the pro-choice crowd is distorting this issue. They want to make it seem like it has everything to do with a woman’s health, when in fact, it has nothing to do with it. It’s all about the choices they choose to make and they want free and unfettered access to a procedure that is swiftly killing the future generations of America.

    Mr. Pink Eyes,
It’s sickening to hear so-called religious people support baby murder. It is totally irresponsible and cowardly. They don’t really believe in choice at all except when it comes to the strong getting rid of the weak. They talk about “choice” because their own lives are protected by the very laws that are cast aside for abortions to take place. Abortion is probably the worst crime against humanity since slavery. Frankly, I think abortion is unAmerican, unChristian, and unreligious generally. It is, indeed, killing America’s future.

While most Christians are probably conservatives there are those whose Christianity leads them to be more liberal politically. Mike Huckabee is a perfect example of that with his releasing of over 1,000 criminals while governor of Arkansas. But how anyone can equate abortion to something that God would condone is beyond me.

A “God given right”. Thats not only a stretch, but sounds like something a non-believer would say and not a pastor. Many pastors on the left have tossed aside traditional values to conform with what they believe are comtemporary norms in our society. Religion must a constant and not changed as the times change, least it have no value.

That is very true, if a religion changes to serve the times than it is no religion at all. Religion should be a constant.

It’s a shame that some people of faith are saying such worldly things. God said go forth and multiply, Thou shalt not murder, and– most importantly– God said I knew you before you were formed. Someone I know was doing a walk for hunger, so I went to the “world church service” website to check it out. And on the side of the homepage, there was a link to news stories about “the countdown to Copenhagen”. Unfortunately this stopped me from sponsoring the walker. The Lord does mysterious things, but pastors should also know that Satan is the great deceiver.
