General McChrystal to resign after criticizing Barack Obama in Rolling Stone magazine

June 22, 2010

It is now being reported that General McChystal has tendered Barack Obama his resignation after he criticized the president in an interview in Rolling Stone magazine. It is now up to Barack Obama whether the general’s resignation will be accepted, he has recalled the general from Afghanistan and it appears as if General McChystal’s military career may be over.

The interview has not yet been published, but it will be in the issue that is due to be released this Friday. From what we can gather from the information that has been released, General McChrystal criticized Barack Obama’s lack of leadership, his Afghanistan policy, his lack of knowledge on military issues, and what he has deemed as Barack Obama’s disinterest in listening to what he had to say at their one previous meeting.

My regular readers know that there is no bigger supporter of the military than I. I love, admire, respect, and support all of our men and women who have chosen to wear the uniform of the United States of America, past, present, and future. That is what makes this post a little hard for me.

Let me first state that I agree with most of what the general has reportedly said. I do not think that Barack Obama has the military knowledge or the resolve to fight these wars the way they should be fought. However, the general has done a disservice to all of the men and women who are fighting for him and dying under his command. There is a proper time and place to criticize a president’s war policies– I for one am unwilling to criticize Barack Obama’s war policies, I am unwilling to politicize the wars while Americans are fighting and dying for  us. I support the president’s war policies and hope that he is receiving, and listening to, the right advice– and it was not the proper time, and certainly not the proper place for General McChrystal to be criticizing the war effort.

By making these statements publicly he has provided the very enemy he is fighting with an assessment of the president that can only serve to embolden them and put our heroes more in harms way than they already are. While it is true that most terrorist leaders have probably already come to the same conclusions as has General McChrystal, to have the general who is in charge of the Afghanistan war come out and confirm what they already believe is unforgivable.

I respect the general and thank him for his years of service to our country but he has gone over the line and needs to be removed from his position. There can be no defending what he said during a time of war, he has given the enemy reason to believe that there is dissent among the ranks of the military with their leader, and in doing do he has given the enemy another reason to  fight even harder against us.

What the general said might be true, but he showed an unbelievable lack of discretion and clearly was not thinking about the possible ramifications on our soldiers because of what he was saying. Because of this his resignation or firing is both proper and necessary. Or heroes deserve a better commander.

A Dem/Libber General, that voted FOR Obama, sees the light I am guessing, speaks his mind, not a good thing, and is going under the bus… I see a news gig and a lotta $$$ in his future…

Why would a military leader vote for a man with no experience in the first place. He showed a lack of judgement there, that is for sure.

I think McCrystal may have sacrificed his career to save the troops. He knows he was fighting a war we are meant to lose. His suggestions and pleas for help were being ignored or postponed. Our troops are being penalized for acting like soldiers and the enemy is flourishing under new Pentagon rules. Sorry, but I don’t trust this commander in chief. We need to get out of there and bring our troops home.

I don’t trust Obama either, I wasn’t trying to defend him, I just feel as if McChrystal went about this the wrong way.

I too believe that the General has done a disservice to those under his command and he most likely should be relieved of his duties. I also agree that he has likely reached a point of frustration with this unexperienced and seemingly uninterested President. It is my opinion that this President is the least experienced leader this country has ever had and this is probably not the last of the defectors we will see.

For me it is a relief to hear someone in the mil leadership break the silence. I know that silence is there for a reason, but . . . It is just so gut-wrenching to be an active duty mil member, sworn to defend the Constitution, and watch this War on Terror drag on for years, with ridiculous Rules of Engagement, putting our best men and women in harm’s way, and all for a country that . . .what? Politicizes everything, stomps all over the Constitution, and uses the military as one of so many faceless pawns. I can say these things b/c I’m just a spouse. Those like my husband and McC must remain silent. But I think that for them, it’s like being a mercenary, a flippin gladiator, fighting for the whims of a dictator.

A warrior gets pretty chafed in this situation. Guess McC had enough, and had his “MacAruthur” moment. We all have our limits.
