Harry Reid to add DREAM Act to the defense bill

September 14, 2010

Democrats know that they do not have the votes in the Congress or the support with the American people to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill. But that does not mean that they are not going to do whatever  they can before the November election to pass the beginnings of the immigration reform legislation.

Today Harry Reid began that process by adding the DREAM Act to the defense funding bill. The official name of the DREAM Act is: Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors Act. The DREAM Act was one of the most controversial aspects of the Bush/Kennedy/McCain amnesty bill that went down in flames in 2007 after the people of the United States rose as one to kill it.

In short, the DREAM Act allows a person who was under 16 when they came to America illegally, graduated high school (at taxpayer expense) and completed at least 2 years of college (and who would eligible for in-state tuition rates even though they are here illegally) a path towards citizenship. An even shorter way to sum up this legislation would be this: it is amnesty for a certain group of illegal aliens.

Inserting this legislation into the defense funding bill is a sly move; if Republicans vote against the funding bill because of the DREAM Act Democrats will claim that Republicans do not support the troops while they are on the field of battle. But by doing this it is really Harry Reid who is using our troops for political gain, and he is doing it on one of the most contentious issues facing the American people in the upcoming months.

He is hoping that by doing this the Democrats will gain a major victory with the radical left heading into November’s elections, and I find this to be a disgusting misuse of his political power. He is afraid of a public debate on this issue because he knows that the general public will never support this bill, so he has decided to insert this language into a bill that would normally have bipartisan support.

This is a calculated move designed to force Republicans into voting for legislation they would normally never support by tying it to a bill that he knows they will never vote against. This is not the way the system is supposed to work. This is just more proof that it is well beyond time for us to take our country back. November is closing in, it will be here before we know it, and we must send a message to Washington that we are sick and tired of these political games.

Great post, Steve. This is just one more reason why each and every piece of legislation should be required to stand on it’s own two feet. For far too long, Congress has worked it’s magic and attached completely unrelated pieces of legislation to each other, in the hopes that one or the other could get a piggyback ride into being the law of the land. Republicans and Democrats alike have been guilty and the practice should be stopped or heavily regulated, at the very least.

Thanks Larry, and I agree, every piece of legislation needs to stand on its own. If something cannot get through the COngress on its own, it should never be given the opportunity to sneak through hidden in another bill!

This is just sinister. I’m tired of this elementary school games these politicians continue to play. I’m just simply tired of it! They’re just playing politics and compromising the safety of our men in women in the military. The Republicans need to fight back and call him out! No more taking in lying down. This is absolutely despicable! Great post Steve!

Harry Reid is admitting that he doesn’t know if he has the votes, Republicans will need to hold his feet to the fire on this one!

Call it sinister or sneaky. This is just using the Republican’s tactics against them. Our immigrations policy is a joke. Both parties each have their own agenda: Republicans won’t push for change due to cheap labor, Democrats won’t push hard enough to get the easy votes from minorty voters.

Glad we see eye-to-eye on this! Great article and more details than I had put into mine. Maybe I’m too lazy! 🙂 By the way, I love the Patton quote on your site. Can I use it? 🙂
