Harry Reid’s attempt to pass the DREAM Act by attaching it to the defense bill fails in the senate

September 21, 2010

Having failed in two previous attempts to pass the DREAM Act, Harry Reid decided to try to sneak the DREAM Act into the defense appropriations bill in the hopes that the Republicans in the senate would be forced to pass the legislation or risk the political backlash that would follow with the news that they refused funding for our troops in the field.

For those of you who may not know what the DREAM Act is, here is a brief summary: the DREAM Act allows a person who was under 16 when they came to America illegally, graduated high school (at taxpayer expense) and completed at least 2 years of college (and who would be eligible for in-state tuition rates even though they are here illegally) a path towards citizenship. An even shorter way to sum up this legislation would be this: it is amnesty for a certain group of illegal aliens.

The Democrats know that they do not have the votes to pass comprehensive immigration reform so Harry Reid decided to try to push through the senate the most controversial aspect of the comprehensive immigration bill on the backs of our heroes fighting in a land far away. Just the thought of using our troops in this manner sickens me.

But today the Republicans in the senate did not take the bait and by a vote of 56-43 the defense appropriations bill–along with the DREAM Act and the repeal of Bill Clinton’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy–was defeated.

Republicans knew that the Democrats would use this to claim that the Republicans have abandoned the troops in the field, but that is not true as this bill will come up for a vote once again after the midterm elections, so they voted against this backdoor attempt at granting amnesty to a certain group of illegal aliens.

It is going to be interesting to see whether or not Harry Reid tries to use this tactic to pass amnesty when the bill comes up for a vote again later this year, and it will be equally interesting to see what the Republicans do after they do not have to worry about their re-election bids.

  We will be watching!

This is the act of a desperate political party. If you don’t have anything else go with alienating more of America. Harry Reid is a buffoon that needs to find a new line of work. He is everything that is wrong with Washington DC x 10. Great post Steve!

Hopefully Harry Reid will be retiring in a few short weeks! This was an example of everything that is wrong in Washington and it must change.(By the way, didn’t Barack Obama promise to change the way Washington did business?)

I am glad the Senate Republicans called Reid’s bluff on this and stood their ground. I, for one, will be extremely disappointed if they give it up after the elections.

I am too Larry, I hope that the Rebuplicans realize that we are not all that happy with them either. If they do not get back to constitutional values we will vote them out also.

Look for rock solid Conservatives to stand their ground Larry, but look for RINOs to begin to immediately sharpen their horn…

All the better to gore us with…

And that is why ALL RINOs (even those pretending to be conservatives right now–Harry Reid) need to be voted out as soon as possible!

I caught an Interview with Obama’s Aunt on a local news channel and I was amazed by her sense of entitlement. She almost sounded rehearsed. The basic jist of her argument is that America is Gods land and belongs to all people.
Which on its face would be consistent with our constitution? But she goes on to say that she’s entitled to free benefits whether a citizen or not because apparently our labor, incomes and taxes are also a gift from God that everyone, citizen or not is entitled to.
This seems to be consistent with the Marxist ideology of this administration.

I didn’t see the interview, but I heard clips on the radio. She also said that the system took advantage of her! Wow, and all this time I thought with the free housing and welfare checks that she was taking advantage of the system!

My husband is convinced that the military powers that be/Repubs supporting military will go without the appropriations for as long as it takes to avoid repeal of DADT. I know that sounds all homophobic, but it is not. The truth is there are real problems at the practical level with integrating openly gay persons into the ships and barracks. Worse than integrating females on the ships, which is hard enough, by the way. I mean, do you really want to force someone to bunk with a person of openly different sexual preference, and how would that be any different from forcing coed bunking? How many active duty would leave rather than deal with the discomfort? Call it homophobia if you want, but it won’t magically go away just b/c Lady Gaga wants it to.

The difference between Harry Reid (D) and Richard Lugar (R, IN) is the fact that Herr Reid is out of the “I want to destroy the United States” closet.
George W. Bush signed the SPP, a goal of his fathers’ “New World Order”. His grandfather (Prescott Bush) attempted to overthrow the United States government. Harry just wants to amnesty 6+ million illegals, draining the treasury through entitlements.
Either by armed coup, or economic means, the goal is the same, make America fall.
I think this just goes to show that there is no difference between Democrats and Republicans.

There is probably no bigger cancer in the United States government right now than Harry Reid. He clearly is on the defensive, and hopefully well on his way to a permanent vacation in November. His character is on full display here, trying to sneak something like this in at the 11th hour.

You’re pathetic, Harry, and hopefully you’re out of a job real soon.
