New poll shows independent voters favor Republicans
A new poll by Pew Research shows that independent voters now favor Republicans by almost the same margin that they voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and for Democrats in general in the midterm elections of 2006.
This is very bad news for Barack Obama and the Democrats for the upcoming midterm elections this November. Barack Obama and the Democrats were swept into power on the backs of the independent voters. Without independent voters Barack Obama would not be president, and the fact that this very same voting block has turned against him so quickly has got to have Democrats not only worried about this election, but about the elections of 2012 and beyond.
This latest poll shows that a majority of independents disapprove of healthcare reform and believe that Barack Obama’s economic polices have made the economy worse for them:
45 percent of independents disapprove of the health care reforms passed this year compared to 41 percent who approve of them. A third of independents say Obama’s economic policies have made conditions worse for them rather than better, compared to 24 percent who take a more positive view
When it comes to the size of government, more and more independents think that the government is too big and needs to be made smaller:
In 2006, 53 percent of independents said they’d prefer a smaller government with fewer services; today, 59 percent of them want a check on government growth
Independents are also growing more dissatisfied with the direction of the country:
In 2006, 67 percent of independents were not satisfied with national conditions; today, 76 percent aren’t happy
These numbers have to be sobering for the Democrats because it is becoming apparent to me that Barack Obama and the Democrats misread their victories in 2006 and 2008. Democrats overreached based on this misreading of the American people. The American people were voting against George W Bush and were not necessarily voting for a radical, progressive agenda. This country still remains a center-right country and the American people seem to think that Barack Obama and the Democrats have moved much farther to the left–and much faster–than they thought they would, so they are beginning to reject Barack Obama and the Democrats.
Democrats are beginning to see this as well and they are trying to distance themselves from Barack Obama. A perfect example of this can be found right here in New Hampshire where Representative Paul Hodes–who is running for the Senate–is now trying to claim that he is an independent voice for the state and a fiscal conservative even though he has voted with Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi’s agenda about 94% of the time. And this is happening not just here in New Hampshire, but all across the nation.
The American people are not going to be fooled by such ridiculous claims; we know who voted for and against this radical agenda and we are going to be heard loud and clear this November. And this time WE will be riding to victory on the backs of the independent voters!

I think it will get much worse for the Democrats in the coming years. The American people have soundly rejected these progressive policies. I think we must continue to show the world who these progressive are and what they stand for. Great post Steve.

I think what also hurt them was the manner in which they passed this legislation. The American people sent the Democrats a message with Scott Brown, but instead of listing to us they forced it through. Coupled with the backroom deals that were made and the American people were turned off not only by the policies of the Democrats, but also by the procedures used to pass the policies. You are right, this could hurt them for a long time!

This is encouraging news, but the GOP better be aware that the independents change their directions frequently. If the GOP fails to live up to their promises, those same independents will switch back the the Obama Camp.

So true! The Republicans had better understand that we are watching them and if they fail us we will look elsewhere. Hopefully the success of the Tea Party candidates will teach them that we are no longer fooling around!
