Darrell Issa subpoenas two DHS employees
Last month Darrell Issa–the head of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee–demanded that the Department of Homeland Security turn over documents relating to what he felt was a politicization of hundreds of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. He believes that Janet Napolitano is delaying the release of requested documents–in violation of the law–which might hurt Barack Obama from a political standpoint. At that point it looked as if DHS would be the first target in the crosshairs of Darrell Issa’s accountability gun.
Here is what is at issue here:
The Associated Press reported in July that for at least a year, Homeland Security had sidetracked hundreds of requests for federal records to top political advisers to the department’s secretary, Janet Napolitano. The political appointees wanted information about those requesting the materials, and in some cases the release of documents considered politically sensitive was delayed, according to numerous e-mails that were obtained by the AP.
Yesterday Darrell Issa unloaded on two DHS employees by issuing them subpoenas–because as Democrat Mike Capuano said, sometimes you just have to get a little bloodied up–because of their possible role in delaying the FOIA requests for political reasons. Darrell Issa has repeatedly asked DHS to provide him with certain documents related to his investigation–and much like the initial requests which are being investigated–the department has been less than forthcoming with the information. So Darrell Issa was forced to issue subpoenas in order to get to the bottom of this potential scandal.
I know that I have said it over and over again, but I will say it one more time; Barack Obama promised to run the most open, honest, and transparent administration in history but we have seen time and time again that this certainly is not the case. From secretly meeting with lobbyists off of the White House grounds in order to avoid reporting the meetings to the secret service, to the Department of Homeland Security delaying the release of legally requested documents we have seen that Barack Obama simply is not as transparent–or apparently as honest–as he claims he is.
Janet Napolitano is hiding something and she is hiding it in order to protect Barack Obama and we deserve to know what it is. Yesterday Darrell Issa took the first steps towards shining a light on the darkness that is the Obama regime.

I think Issa feels as if there something here to look into. He’s not a ready shoot aim kind of guy. He smells the smoke…now to find the fire.

And I think there is definitely a fire here. There is no reason for the DHS to be delaying these documents if they were not trying to hide something.

I haven’t heard of a politicians yet who doesn’t feel, upon assuming office, that he or she has somehow transcended the bounds of mere mortality and ascended to some privileged height. They don’t feel bounds by the same laws you and I must obey, and when you or I want to do or read something, we must first be granted permission by these exalted few.
Here in Georgia, it’s purchasing liquor on Sundays – the exalted few won’t even let the issue come to an up-or-down vote in the state Senate. In Washington, it’s everyone, and the Dems are every bit as annoying with their secrecy and privilege as the GOP are. You may rail about Obama meeting with lobbyists outside the White House to escape scrutiny, but of course you remember Vice president Cheney refusing to release the names of those he met with in his office when he was formulating the nation’s energy policy.
I dunno – perhaps this whole secrecy thing is just so ingrained in human nature that we ought to just accept it in our elected leaders.

It understand that this happens with all politicians and Barack Obama isn’t the first and he won’t be the last, but he is the one who ran on transparency because he claimed the Bush administration was one of the most secretive in history and he promised to change that, but now he is no different than the others.

Issa may have had the documents he’s requested leaked to him already. He may be looking to see if the DHS comes up something different. That may be part of the delay. I’m thinking this could potentially cost Nappy her job. We can only hope.

They have had such a free hand for so long that with any luck we can snag a few on Perjury. Of course, who would prosecute. I would love to see Janet spin in the wind for a time.

I like to think that the Republicans would prosecute if they were able to catch the DHS in a lie. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

This transcends who is in office. The government is so big that it will always look out for it’s own self interest. Law, oversight, accountability, all are secondary concerns.

I am afraid that you are right. This has been going on for so long that maybe nobody will be willing to do anything about it because they know that sooner or later they will also be implicated.
