Chuck Schumer proposes Medicare rationing

May 31, 2011

When speaking on  “Meet the Press” yesterday, Chuck Shumer had this to say about Medicare under his proposed “reform” plan:

“The root of the problem is a cost-plus system,” said Schumer of Medicare on “Meet the Press.” “When you’re sick, the doctor gets paid for each service, each prescription, each pill, each test. If you were to tell doctors you get a certain amount of money to treat Jim Smith, who has a certain form of diabetes, say $10,000, every study shows that you’d save hundreds of billions of dollars without cutting benefits to people. That’s what Democrats stand for

I guess what he was trying to say is that doctors are giving Medicare patients treatments and tests which they do not need in order to make higher profits, and that under his plan this practice would stop and because of this billions of dollars would be saved. He also claims that cutting out these tests would not be cutting benefits to those that might actually need these tests. Personally I must have much more faith in the medical profession than Chuck Shumer must because I believe that these doctors would not needlessly order treatments just to turn a profit. How many of these procedures are  necessary for preventative measures, and do these patients risk their health if these procedures are not done before it is too late?

Under his plan all patients would be given the same dollar value and once you reach that dollar value you are shit out of luck. Not all patients with the same problems can be expected to react the same way to the same treatments, but that is exactly what will be assumed if Chuck Shumer has his way. How is this beneficial to those that rely on Medicare to give them affordable coverage, and if a patient needs these additional treatments after that patient has reached his of her limit how is this not cutting benefits if the patient will have to chose between paying for the  additional costs or skipping the potentially lifesaving tests?

Chuck Shumer then went on to blast Paul Ryan’s Medicare reform proposal stating that it would “end Medicare as we know it,” as if his plan wouldn’t do the same. Democrats have even stooped to the level of running the following commercial which depicts Paul Ryan as pushing an old lady in a wheelchair over a cliff because of his Medicare reform proposal.

While people like Chuck Shumer and the Democrats are trying to claim that Republicans want to “end Medicare as we know it,” they all supported Obamacare, which actually did end Medicare as we know it for the plan will cut Medicare payments by 30% over the next three years, and “redistribute” that money to Medicaid.

Barack Obama has already done what the Democrats are trying to claim the Republicans want to do, and if Chuck Shumer has his way they will continue to radically overhaul Medicare, all the while claiming it is the Republicans who do not care about the elderly. The American people simply cannot be expected to fall for this duplicity once again, can they?

Great article. Americans will not fall for this crap — as long as republicns and opposition speak up. That is a big IF. Beyond Ryan, who wants to fight? It’s a bit like the vote brought about by republicans in congress tonight concerning increasing the debt limit by the debt limit by two trillion dollars without strings attached. All republicans will vote no. Dems will be flushed out (except for a few) and vote “present” because nobody wants to identifed as voting yes once re-election for 2012 begins; even though they agree with it! What an effing circus.

And that is the biggest question; will Republicans stand up and point this out or will they hide in the shadows and let the Democrats get away with these lies? Judging by the past I am afraid they will not stand up, I hope that I am wrong.

Truth is not a concept they understand, Steve. The lie about what they are doing and they lie about what the Republicans are doing. We in the blogosphere and the Republicans must keep putting the truth out there for the people to see. This is why I keep calling on the Republicans to take their case directly to the people and ignore the Democrats in Congress. The days of being able to have honest debate over different opinions are long gone. How do you debate with pathological liars?

A great question indeed? Goebbels would be proud: “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State”

Remind me again Steve why they’re hammering Paul Ryan’s plan?

CoF, Steve and John: spot on. Conservative politicains need to speak out. Take the case directly to the people. This period can be the start of a new a turning point. There is significant bad news that will be coming for Progressives in the very near future. Conservatives should be out in front of that. Everyone knows it is coming. Be able to say “I told you this was coming”.

Hopefully when the GOP hopefuls really start campaigning we sill see someone stand up and go after this regime. When Bush was president the Democrats were on TV everyday telling the world how bad he was, yet the Republicans remain quiet as Obama goes about his business. It is time for someone to step in front of the cameras and get serious about this.

I saw Tom Coburn on C-Span the other day. He said if you don’t like the Ryan plan, then fine, what’s your alternative? I guess we have it. Chuckie wants to cap treatment. Even Obama said to take some pain meds and go to hospice. I think I’ll take Ryan’s plan.

It seems to me that Shumer is offering this plan to counter Ryan’s plan; maybe part of a compromise?

Medicare is based on a Ponzi scheme. I’d simply demand a refund of all the Medicare taxes I have paid in my lifetime.
