Why the conservative talking heads are wrong

May 13, 2012

I don’t listen to the nationally syndicated conservative talk show hosts all that much, preferring instead to listen to local talk radio programs, but I do usually tune into Rush Limbaugh at lunch for a few minutes to hear what he has to say, and I do put on Sean Hannity on the way home from work when Howie Carr is on a commercial break.

Rush Limbaugh is almost totally unpalatable because–when he isn’t too busy talking about himself or promoting his iced tea–of the way he revels in the bad economic news, and the joy he seems to take over the unemployment numbers while ordinary Americans are feeling the pain of those numbers is off-putting. And while I find Sean Hannity’s show to be more realistic and down to earth I find these two talk show hosts–and frankly, most conservative talk show hosts to be missing the larger issue.

From what I have been able to glean from my admittedly small listening sample of these two conservative talking heads it appears as if Limbaugh and Hannity seem to feel that all we have to do is elect Mitt Romney, or any other Republican, and all our prayers will be answered; the country will miraculously turn around, and we will be saved from the impending doom. I believe they either don’t understand the true depths of the economic calamity about to befall the nation or they are so blinded by party loyalty that they are purposely ignoring the truth and are touting what is best for the party but not necessarily is best for the country. I do not think it is a case of not understanding.

First, here is where they are right; if Barack Obama is reelected he will hit the gas pedal and drive us over the cliff at a high rate of speed leaving America burning in small little pieces on the ground below. But here is where they are wrong and what they are ignoring; while they believe that anyone but Obama would be a better option, the truth is that while Mitt Romney will ease off the gas pedal he will gently steer us over to the cliff before we teeter off. America will still be left burning in small little pieces on the ground below, the only difference will be the rate of speed at which we plunge over the cliff.

And the same is true for whomever the Republican nominee would be; the only man talking about making real cuts in spending, and not  just slowing down the rate of future spending, is Ron Paul–and he is considered a kook for talking about real cuts–but even if he were to somehow win the nomination he will never get the support of the Congress needed to enact his agenda and we will still be headed toward the proverbial cliff.

This is where the problem lies, it is going to take more than one elected official to make the changes needed to stave of the economic meltdown, and I don’t see any way in the near future enough people will make it to Washington based on a truly fiscally responsible platform to make any difference because the people really don’t seem ready to hear the hard truth. We also have to change the entitlement mindset that has infiltrated a growing portion of the population and that is not going to be an easy task at this point. The mere fact that Ron Paul is considered a kook for proposing real changes shows us how difficult a proposition this really is.

America needs more than simply an alternative to Barack Obama if we are to survive, and that is what the conservative talking heads seem to be ignoring or forgetting; ridding ourselves of Barack Obama would be a fine start indeed, but if it isn’t coupled with electing a person who is willing to take a stand and put his political career on the line–the way Scott Walker did in Wisconsin–and unless it is coupled with a Congress serious about making the tough choices then it is all for naught. Again this leads back to the people; are they ready to give the reigns over to the type of people who will make the tough decisions even if it means a cut in government benefits?

Mitt Romney is not that person, he will bend to the polls on all issues because he has no core political beliefs, and quite frankly with the exception of Paul Ryan, I don’t think there is anyone in Washington who truly understands what will happen to the United States if we do not make serious inroads in the very near future at curbing our debt and our spending. Yet the conservative talking heads are speaking as if Mitt Romney is the answer to all of our problems and they are doing this based on the fact that he is not Barack Obama, not on what he stands for because nobody really does know what he stands for. Ann Coulter’s sudden conversion into becoming a Mitt Romney supporter is a perfect example of this; she vehemently opposed Mitt Romney and stated he needed to be stopped at all costs, until the day when she suddenly reversed course and basically called him the Republican savior and the only person who could turn this country around. This is where a person loses credibility and this is what is wrong with the conservative talking heads.

The conservative talking heads are trying to put a smiley face on this election because they want the people to rally around Mitt Romney and help him defeat Barack Obama simply because he is a nominal Republican. In doing so they ignoring the depth of the problem and all this does is help to mask the problem and we will all be worse off because of it. Any conservative who is being honest with himself cannot look at the Bush years and consider that period in our history to be a fiscally responsible time. Sure, the spending under Bush looks tame compared to the current regime, but spending has been out of control for many years and both parties have been responsible for it.

Until the politicians of the country get serious about this issue, and unless the people finally come to the realization that this level of spending is unsustainable, we will continue to head towards the cliff and the only question will be, who is driving the bus? Simply ridding ourselves of Barack Obama isn’t enough, and that is what the conservative talking heads are missing and that is why they are wrong.

Until we get our entire system under control we will continue down the same path. Many of our political leaders on both sides of the aisle have been corrupted by special interests and once elected the first thing they must do is repay the special interests for their loyalty or risk losing their support in the future, this naturally means that the people they are elected to represent take a back seat as the agenda of the special interests are pursued.

John Carey of Sentry Journal has written an excellent article entitled “What are conservatives trying to conserve” in which he talks about the ills of simply following one party because one thinks a certain party is the lesser of two evils. Here is how he opens the article:

Some time ago I wrote an article titled “I’m not the same conservative I was five years ago.“  In it I tried to explain my own evolution from being a conservative who blindly followed the establishment narrative to one who no longer was willing to give the establishment a free pass.  I learned that big government statists were not limited by party affiliation.  In fact many statists can be found in our own conservative party.  I decided it was time to take off the party goggles and view the issues through the eyes of an American who loves liberty.  It took some time and a great deal of reading to course correct my direction but when I did I realized how wrong I had been about many things.  It made me take a hard look at myself and ask what I was trying to conserve as a conservative

By definition the lesser of two evils is still evil and John Carey gets this, and he has helped me to get this as well. Now if our politicians–and those talking heads who loyally support the politicians simply based on party affiliation–would get this we would all be better for it. The conservative talking heads are still talking about protecting the status quo, the only difference being which party is in charge of the status quo, and that simply isn’t good enough because that is how we got into this problem in the first place.

This is more than a fight between Democrats and Republicans because we have reached the tipping point in this country; this is a fight for the future of our country, for the heart and soul of America, to determine what type of nation we will be living in for generations to come. We need to return this country back to its founding roots, anything less will be the end of the country as we know it.

Hannity is an inarticulate windbag and Rush us just a windbag.

Peter, don’t sugar coat it! Tell us what you really think of them! Personally, I have alot of other radio personalities I prefer to those two. I do like http://www.talkstreamlive.com , there you can finetune what you want from many many stations. I really like The Power Hour in the morning, in particular, Joyce Riley, if anyone cares to check her out. I just hate that we are “told” who they think we need to vote for, last time I checked, I DID have a brain and a mind of my own and can still make decisions based on what I THINK, not someone else.

thanks for writing! Just let these talking heads do all the semi-posturing, but always re-actionary, with no new or even clever opinion other than satire or ignorance, boring and extra boring..

Perfection in only the dream of an Utopian mind and not a reality that’s worthy of consideration. Rush and Hannity only rally around Mitt for a simple reason, they know the reality of the situation and have come to grips with it. They see an america uneer the leadership of obama or one moving away from the socialistic policies on the american hater, Barack Obama, and as you impy have choosen the lesser of two evils. I fully understand the mistrust you have with Mitt, but the underlying factor has to be the defeat on Barack in the upcoming election and any attempt to paint Mitt as something less than than a free market capitalist is nothing more than sowing discontent in the ranks of the true conservatives. I wish there was a magic bullet, but know that no such thing exist. I cherish my conservative friends and fully realize that we don’t always agree and I appreciate the differences that sometime arise, but I must say at this time we must all rally around the banner and not cast doubt on our candidate for those on the left will do nothing less.

It is a sad commentary that supposedly knowing and appreciating the mortal peril facing this country if this Anerica hating couple retain residence in the White House wasn’t enough for these egomaniacal super rich to put aside their self interest and use their untold influence and riches to put together a coalition of the truly like minded and do as the bad guys have done and find that true conservative articulate enough to kick the shit out of this Marxist monster who will be unrelenting in his merciless destruction of all that is America:it’s people, institutions, traditions.

I understand what you are saying Ron, and maybe I am expecting too much too soon but it just doesn’t seem like enough people with the power to be heard are letting the people know exactly how close we are to destruction. ROmney would be a step in the right direction despite all his faults, but it would only be one step and I just don’t think we have much time left.

It took us a hundred years to get here, and one election will not get the job done. To reelect Obama is a death wish for our country come true.

I know it is going to be a slow process but I feel the people with the power to be heard are downplaying the problem as well and we are getting close to the day of reckoning.

The Democrats for some time now have been in love with the European model. But it is falling apart very predictably. So, why can’t they see that? To get back where we need to be will require unity. We don’t have unity by any means right now. We have to start bu getting rid of Onama and then with the Tea Parties we start building that unity we need.Unity comes from a common culture. Right now we are so polorized it is impossible to get any thing done.

I think the Dems see that the European model is falling apart and that is what the people like Obama want because they feel they can come out of a collapse with permanent control.
Getting rid of Obama is a start, but I just don’t think that anyone who gets elected is really going to make the needed changes because it would likelycost him the next election.

While I sure agree about the dangers this country faces, and I don’t disagree with the myopia of some of the talking heads, I think there is great danger in saying our choices are the lesser of two evils. I agree that there is a chance that Romney will govern like Bush2. I agree the economic situtation is grim. John Mauldin does a great newsletter on Europe, and that seems to be our future.
But to be fair, if you were to graph a honest contuinum from bad to great, Obama and Romney are light years appart. Not that Romney is that great, but that Obama is that bad, and we can never loose sight of that fact.
In surgery, slowing blood loss is far, far better than bleeding out. There is no question who the choices for president will be. Without fighting hard for the non-Obama, there will be no future. Over the cliff we go. But if we can buy time, maybe new heros my come forth,

I get what you are saying and I wish I could be more optimistic about our future, but there is nobody I see in the near furute who is really willing to do what it will take because all of these guys put reelection ahead of everything else. Maybe Romney would buy time until someone else came along but I don’t see anyone coming along any time soon.

Even before the 2010 election I commented on the blog site “comments On National Ambesia” that the Job #1 for both the Dems and Republican establishment would be marginalizing and discrediting the Tea Party. Anyone who today feels differently probably also believes the republicans are as concerned with saving their country as they are with getting a good old boy Rino installed in the top spot and thereby protecting the status quo.

I agree, I think the establishment Republicans would love to see the Tea Party done away with. Both parties are more worried about protecting the status quo than anything else and the Tea Party is a threat to the system.

Great article Steve and thanks for the mention. You hit the nail on the head. There must be a plan beyond Obama to reestablish the constitution and get back to the principles that made America great. My fear is there is nothing these current crop of politicians are willing to do to stop the bleeding. They’re more concerned positioning themselves in regards to their hold on power than doing anything to upset the apple cart. This is why we need to elect men and women who are truly constitutionally minded and who care about liberty. It will take more than one election and we will experience some fiscal problems in the near future. We’re the United States of America and we’ve been downgraded twice…how does that happen. It happens because we have an out of control government spending like this is no tomorrow and unwilling to do anything to correct its coarse. And now our children will be paying for our unwillingness to fire those who serve themselves and not the people.

Thank you and you are welcome. It is time for these politicians to put the country ahead of themselves and it is time for us to hold them accountable when they do not. It is going to take more than one election to turn this around but we have to start now. I just hope Washington gets serious about this problem soon, but I have a feeling they won’t.

I don’t listen to either (or any of them) and I’ll tell you why: They’re trying to sell books, push their view, increase their power.

While I think that they do care about America they want to advance their own goals first. You just can’t trust someone like that.

Good point Harrison. Too many times these people are promoting things that will help them first and you always have to wonder what is pushing their agenda.

Rush Limbaugh was fairly entertaining, MANY YEARS AGO… Now he’s nothing more than a pompous gas bag… Hannity never has rung my bell, in any way… Levin does a good job, I happen to like Michael Savage too, not crazy about him, but I like his style…

We had a talk show guy here in Dallas, Mark Davis, he was really good for a long time, then he took a HARD turn towards Libertarianism and wRONg Paul… Sad..

I know you didn’t intent this thread to be about talk shows, but living near the bay area of California, surrounded by the radical left I desperatly seek contact with conservative input. I think you are right on point in your writings, but I can’t listen to you at work. If it weren’t for Bennet, Prager, and Hewitt I would loose my mind. I need to hear well thought out rational I can use, because sadly, I have little time to read.

I understand exactly what you are saying and I do listen to talk radio whenever I can, I just prefer the local guys to the national guys. That isn’t to say that the national hosts don’t serve a purpose for they do bring the conservative viewpoint to light when the MSM won’t but sometimes I feel as if they miss the bigger picture.
