The United States apologizes after Muslims attack the US embassy in Egypt on the anniversary of September 11th
Correction: I reported in this post that the US ambassador to Egypt was killed last night in the riots, when in fact it was the US ambassador to Libya who was killed. I regret the mistake and apologize.
As I wrote about in this post, earlier today Egyptian protesters stormed the US embassy in Cairo, tore down and burned the United States flag, and attempted to raise a black flag which is usually associated with Islamic terrorists over the embassy because they were upset with an American made anti-Muslim movie and thought this movie should be banned. And in case you didn’t notice, this just happens to be the anniversary of the terrorists’ greatest attack on America.
Nobody seems to know what movie these people were protesting, or if this movie even exists other than in the minds of the protesters. That doesn’t matter, when you are attacked a response is needed and after the attack the US embassy in Cairo released this statement:
The U.S. Embassy said in a statement that it “condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims — as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions.”
“Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy,” the statement read. “We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.”
After the attack the US embassy had a condemnation alright, only they didn’t condemn those who carried out this attack, the US embassy condemned the American people who they claim are trying to hurt the feelings of Muslims and stated that some Americans were abusing their right of free speech. Again, nobody even knows what movie–if any–these protesters were supposedly offended by, but that didn’t stop the politically correct officials at the US embassy from placing the blame for these attacks on the American people while removing all guilt from those who carried out the attack.
Most likely Barack Obama approved this message–that is if he decided to listen to a briefing on it–so once again he has bowed to those who would do us harm and has apologized for America when it is America who should be demanding an apology. Egypt should be condemning the actions of her citizens, not the other way around.

Did you hear O’Reilly crediting this traitor in the WH for defeating Al Qada? I still maintain that Obama has been hard wired to win this election. I just wonder if the GOP will give up their turn in 2016 to accommodate Hill and Bill; that is if we still have presidential elections after this anti-american’s second term.

It is sickening to see the religion of peace showing themselves for what they really are. I tend to think we need to leave those countries who treat our citizens in this manner, stop all foreign aid to them, and let them kill each other. Their history shows that if they aren’t fighting us, they will fight among themselves. I say let them have at it.

Thought I responded to this last night. Oh well.
The headline makes it appear that the protests were timed to coincide with the anniversary of 9/11. It turns out the protest was against an indy film, apparently highly critical and even mocking of Islam, produced in the US. The protesters are apparently (still) unfamiliar with western concepts of freedom of expression, even when it comes to matters religious. The killing of Americans and the assaults on our embassies, even if done by extremists pursuing their own anti-American agenda, adds to the blot on Islam that began long before 9/11.
My personal feeling is that all of us should treat each others’ beliefs and customs with respect, at least to the extent that they don’t interfere with human rights. Nevertheless, I don’t feel called upon to defend God, and I honestly have doubts about religions that call for the beating or killing of people accused of insulting Him – without trying to be snarky about it, I think God can take care of Himself pretty well, and if a religion is so shaky it has to resort to violence to protect its adherents from hearing it questioned, well, it’s got some pretty serious problems.
The “apology” was issued before the protests, in an effort to head them off.

The headline was not meant to imply these attacks were timed to coincide with September 11th, I just thought it needed to be pointed out that America was attacked and we were apologizing for being attacked on the same day terrorists had their most successful day against US.
I did write in the post that this was over an anti-Muslim movie which was made, although it now turns out it might be a youtube video or something, however I wouldn’t be surprised if the attackers did consider the date when they planned this attack.

It’s beginning to appear more and more that the movie was just an excuse to carry out a planned assault. Not a lot of protesters, even in that troubled corner of the world, attend rallies armed with RPGs.
And why the embassies were not more securely defended is a question the President should address.

I was willing to give the benefit of the doubt at first TGY and tried to believe this was a random act and the date was a coincidence, but I am no longer able to do so. This was well planned for quite awhile to occur on this date and I also believe the movie excuse was just that, an excuse put out by the Obama administration to play down the fact that they failed us in keeping our people safe. I now also believe this was a targeted attack: I believe they knew were our ambassador was and the intended to kill him from the beginning. There are now some reports coming out about what they did to our ambassador before they killed him, but to this point they are still rumors and I am not willing to write about them yet. But they are very disturbing and I hope it is false.

What the embassy in Cairo issued wasn’t much of an apology, in fact:
“The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.”
In other words – We believe in tolerance and respect for others’ beliefs, and deplore it when some are intolerant and disrespectful; nevertheless, we also have complete freedom of speech.
It’s interesting to note that Governor Romney, not waiting to verify facts, inaccurately described the above statement as an apology issued after the embassy was stormed. He was apparently unaware that the statement was issued several hours beforehand, before any violence occurred.
Putting aside for the moment the fact that the Governor felt compelled to turn the issue into an element of the campaign before even expressing condolences for the 4 Americans killed, I’m worried if, as President, he will similarly jump the gun before all the facts are in. He’s already alienated our friends and our competitors overseas, and I’m sure this gaffe will make them even more nervous. Even President George W. Bush, not generally noted for his patience, allowed the facts to be thoroughly analyzed before even identifying Al Quaeda as the group responsible for the 9/11 attacks, let alone committing US troops. This intemperate reaction on the candidate’s part should give us all pause.
Anyway, the President and the Secretary of State have both condemned the attacks; the only actual apology I’m aware of is from Libya’s leadership.

Condemning and Strongly Condemning just doesn’t cut it. We are becoming neutered as a nation. Now we are sending in troops, where will that lead and for how long? So Obama issues his little statement and heads to Las Vegas for more campaigning, I am really getting tired of him not doing the job he was paid to do. Not that he knows how to do it, but geeze, Mr. President “man up” and lead. How thin do we need to spread our depleted military? What about OUR borders, do they even matter anymore?

The comments from the Cairo embassy came *before* the assaults, and from what I read, it’s fairly standard in situations like this – “We’re sorry the movie offends you; it offends us too, but in our nation we hold freedom of speech to be sacred. Grow up and get on with your lives.” Personally, I think that if Allah is so offended by some of these cartoons, etc., so much that he wants people made dead as a result, he’s got the power to make it happen.
