Obamacare: UPS to drop 15,000 spouses from healthcare benefits

August 21, 2013

The Obamacare fallout continues and the hits just keep on coming. One of the trends we have seen as Obamacare draws closer to full implementation is layoffs by companies to get under the number of employees which Obamacare mandates an employer must provide healthcare. A second trend we are seeing is companies cutting employer hours to under 30 hours in order to avoid the now delayed employer mandate.

And now a third trend may be developing as well, according to this story, UPS is dropping healthcare coverage for the spouses of 15,000 employees:

United Parcel Service Inc. plans to remove thousands of spouses from its medical plan because they are eligible for coverage elsewhere. The Atlanta-based logistics company points to the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, as a big reason for the decision, reports Kaiser Health News.

Naturally the regime is denying this is all because of the ill advised and poorly implemented healthcare reform law:

The decision comes as many analysts are downplaying the Affordable Care Act’s effect on companies such as UPS, noting that the move reflects a long-term trend of shrinking corporate medical benefits, Kaiser Health News reports

But UPS says Obamacare is the reason for this decision:

But UPS repeatedly cites Obamacare to explain the decision, adding fuel to the debate over whether it erodes traditional employer coverage, Kaiser says.

Rising medical costs, “combined with the costs associated with the Affordable Care Act, have made it increasingly difficult to continue providing the same level of health care benefits to our employees at an affordable cost,” UPS said in a memo to employees.

But, but, but…..I thought if you liked your coverage you would be able to keep it? UPS is the first company we have heard of to take this path in the wake of Obamacare’s implementation, but I am sure it will not be the last.

We can only hope that we reach critical mass for those who are late to the Ponzi scheme Obama is running.

Obamacare is bad but there seems to be something else going on. Big companies may be able to carve back generous employment packages. The UPS employees are represented by the Teamsters Union and their benefits were very good. There is too much information that is not available to know the whole story. UPS is not a totally public company.

The unions approved of Obamacare because they thought they would be exempt but now their members are finding out differently and this could come back to bite Obama.

I hope people are finally understanding that ObamaCare is proof that Obama doesn’t care.

That was very interesting, thanks for sharing it. There is no doubt that this is going to be a trend under Obamacare.

The Affordable Care Act just keeps getting more and more unaffordable. I wonder what it’s going to take to make a majority of Americans wake up and realize just how badly we have been screwed?

I think the majority of Americans now understand how bad this law is, but I wonder of the Congress has the courage to stand up and oppose it.

This turkey is going to cause a ton of suffering, but the Democrats will use that to demonize business and capitalism. Always remember, no matter how hard liberal policy fails, it’s always someone else’s fault.

Exactly, the left is going to blame the employers for being greedy all the while knowing this was going to happen. This is all part of the plan.

Steve, here is a story about Delta Airlines. They are facing the same problems as UPS.
At this rate there will be a big for sale sign on the US by 2014.

The 15,000 number seemed small to me and here is why. UPS will drop medical benefits for the spouses of its white-collar workforce who are able to get coverage through their own employers. The change applies only to spouses of nonunion employees in the U.S.—the company’s 250,000 union workers won’t be affected. Apparently UPS doesn’t want to upset the Teamsters just yet.

What a coincidence! Once again the non union employees are being treated differently than the union employees, and of course this will help to keep the left’s biggest campaign donors on his side–for now.
