Chris Christie signs New Jersey DREAM Act into law

January 7, 2014

In an attempt to pick the Republican nominee for president in 2016 the mainstream media has already anointed Chris Christie as the only Republican candidate who can defeat Hillary Clinton.

Much like when the mainstream media anointed John McCain and Mitt Romney as the Republicans to have the best chance at winning the White House in 2008 and 2012 respectively this is nothing but an attempt by the media to chose the most liberal Republican as a fall back in case the Democrat actually loses the election. I believe this is called hedging your bets.

There are many reasons why Republicans should not support a Chris Christie presidential run, not the least of which is his stance on illegal immigration. Today he reaffirmed my concerns when he signed the DREAM Act into law in the state of New Jersey.

Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday was joined in celebrating the passage of the New Jersey DREAM Act by a bipartisan coalition of state politicians, calling it an important step toward “maximizing” the state’s investment in public education.

“[O]ur job, I believe, as a government, is to give every one of these children, who we have already invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in, an opportunity to maximize that investment,” Christie said Tuesday at the signing ceremony in Union City, N.J.

As an avid supporter of state rights I believe Chris Christie was well within his right to do so, however that does not mean I have to support his candidacy for president and I believe it gives us a glimpse into how he will govern on the national level if he was ever to–gasp–get elected to the presidency.

This is much the same as 2012 when the Republicans ran Mitt Romney as their nominee for president; he passed universal healthcare for the state of Massachusetts but opposed it on the national level. While this is a legitimate distinction it is not a distinction that most Americans in this day and age understand and I believe it was partly, if not mostly, responsible for dooming his chances of ever becoming president.

If and when Chris Christie announces his candidacy for president this is a question he will now have to answer for in the primary and I suspect he will use the state/federal argument in the same manner as did Mitt Romney on healthcare. It did not work for Romney and I doubt it will work for Christie, and besides, does anyone really believe he does not support the DREAM Act at the Federal level?

The Incredible Bulk signed it in the city I grew up in. Historically a city of 50,000 Italian, German, Irish and other European nationalities as well as Cubans who migrated when Castro destroyed their once beautiful island, Union City, NJ is now a city of over 70,000, that they can find to count, 75% Domiinican. Oh, did I mention the town is approximately one square mile? The big man knows what side his bread is buttered on. How long before free tuition for The Dreamers becomes law? No problem. We in the middle class have plenty of discretionary income we won’t mind giving to the taxman. And of course the middle class won’t expect any financial aid for its kids since they’re here legally and therefore not deserving.

There is no doubt in my mind that free tuition will be next. This issue bothers the hell out of me because while I am a New Hampshire resident both me and my wife work in Massachusetts. Massachusetts is on the same path and it bothers me that illegals in Mass. who pay no taxes will get a break that my boys did not get even though I pay taxes in that state. This is fair?!

Another reason to opposed Christie as the repub nominee is his anti-gun stance. I’m sure given 10 minutes we could come up w/ about 2-3 dozen other reasons not to support him
