The CBO projects Obamacare will cost 2.5 million jobs over the next decade

February 4, 2014

The CBO has released a new report on Obamacare and the news is not good; Obamacare will directly cause the loss of 2.5 million jobs over the next decade:

The new healthcare law will cost the nation the equivalent of 2.5 million workers in the next decade, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated in a report released Tuesday.

The nonpartisan agency found the reform law’s negative effects on the economy would be “substantially larger” than what it had previously anticipated.

It said the equivalent of 2.3 million workers would be lost by 2021, compared to its previous estimate of 800,000, and that 2.5 million workers would be lost by 2024. It also projected that labor force compensation would be reduced by 1 percent from 2017 to 2024 — twice its previous estimate — and that declining economic growth would add $1 trillion more to deficits.

Part of the reason will be the fact that people will either work less hours so they will be eligible for subsidies or decide to leave the workforce altogether:

“The estimated reduction stems almost entirely from a net decline in the amount of labor that workers choose to supply, rather than from a net drop in business’ demand for labor,” the CBO report said.

Some people will leave the workforce or reduce their hours in response to lower wages because of the healthcare law, while others will leave or reduce their hours because they have insurance coverage and do not need to work full time to keep it, the CBO said.

The Obama regime apparently feels this is good news:

The White House swiftly pushed back against the findings, seeking to dismiss suggestions from Republicans that the Affordable Care Act has contributed to a slower economic recovery or would “kill” jobs.

It pointed out that the CBO concluded the reduction in worker hours was almost entirely because of workers choosing to work less.

The Obama regime is now dismissing the CBO report while once they touted the CBO in order to gain support for Obamacare. Funny how that works, isn’t it?

Talk about disincentivizing the work ethic in this country! The government is now in the process of making it less beneficial for Americans to work by making them more dependent on the government for what they otherwise would have had to work for, but of course that was all part of the plan from the beginning. The more people are dependent on the government they more they are subservient to it as well.

I guess the Obama regime will defend this by stating that because many Americans are choosing to work part time instead of full time this will open up more part time jobs for more Americans–talk about twisted logic!

“…One big issue: the health insurance subsidies in the law. That’s a substantial benefit that decreases as people earn more money, so at a certain point, a person has to choose between earning more money or continuing to get the maximum help with health insurance payments. In other words, people might work longer and harder, but actually earn no more, or earn even less, money. That is a disincentive to work. (The same thing happens when people qualify for food stamps or other social services.) …” (MOP)

The above “is truly an example of a Goebbelsian work of art when it comes slaying any facts that do not fit the “glorious leader” narrative.” ZeroHedge

I think the US economy will shed 2 million jobs much quicker then the CBO guesstimates. The country is going to reach a tipping point less people working less money to spend and a government on a spending spree. Why are we wanting to add more people to the country when the economy is going to contract. Why are we raising the minimum wage when economics dictate that the minimum wage should be reduced because of an oversupply of labor.

That is exactly right, in this case we are seeing it come to fruition. Working more and making more money actually costs you money, you have less money than you would if you worked less and took government handouts. It is a sad day in America.

Reminds me of when LBJ’s Great Society Program kicked in. I recall that all our farm workers quit and moved to town to sit in their rockers on the front porch. After all LBJ was putting the food on the table, so why should they work.. Who says history doesn’t repeat itself.

Here is how it will read. Sometime in the future the administration will claim it actually would have lost 5 mil jobs were it not for Obama.
I wish we could hold the government responsible for putting out correct numbers for budgets/unemployment. Since Obama was elected they always come out and say we have created this many jobs but will not acknowledge that does not even keep up with the growth of the worker base and jobs lost from policy.

That is exactly what the regime will say and we saw them do this with the stimulus as well.

This is a good article I ran across this morning. Gives us something to think about:

Thanks for the link Lou. It is pretty scary to hear SCOTUS say that in times of war the laws fall silent. But of course we have seen this before…..

So you have a factory with 155 people. PPACA kicks in and three of your workers, after sitting down and doing the math, decide to retire early and get their health insurance through PPACA.

You hire three more people to replace them.

So where are the lost jobs?

Yes, under your scenario there are no jobs lost, but the CBO is projecting over 2 million jobs will be lost. The CBO was once used by Democrats to justify Obamacare when the reports were in their favor and now they are pushing this report aside.
What is most troubling to me about this report is the prediction that people will start opting to work fewer hours because it is more beneficial to them because they can then get subsidies to help them pay for healthcare. I don’t blame them at all, but do we really want to promote less work and more government dependency as the best way forward?

That’s not just my scenario, Steve, it’s also the CBO’s. The report says 2.3 million workers (not jobs) will be lost within 10 years. The ratios are the same as my factory example, except I should have noted that those three workers take ten years to leave the factory.

As to your question – remember the good old days when men worked and women stayed home? I was HR Dir at a factory where more then half the workers were women, and more than half of them were working not for the money, but for the health insurance program we had. I’m sure that some of them are examining the math right now and wondering if the affordability of healthcare under PPACA will justify their leaving the workforce to return to being fulltime homemakers.

Take good care and may God bless us all!

How is Obamalama containing his glee? The pieces continue to fall into place as he fundamentally destroys the country. Fat ass Hillary must be licking her chops as she waits to descend upon the White House and finish the job her mulatto comrade doesn’t have the balls to finish. Her first act if executive privilege will be to appoint Mooch as portion control czar.
