Obamacare: House votes to delay the individual mandate for one year
Last week America’s Watchtower wrote about the House planning to schedule a vote on delaying Obamacare’s individual mandate for one year and today they held the vote and it passed by a vote of 250-160. 27 Democrats crossed party lines to vote in favor while one Republican, Paul Broun, voted against the measure.
In the post last week I predicted the measure would pass the House and let’s face it, I was not exactly going out on a limb with that prediction. But I am surprised that 27 Democrats also voted to delay the mandate.
As I wrote in that post this measure faces a much more unpredictable vote in the Senate, if Harry Reid decides to bring the measure to the floor for a vote in the first place. I was not sure he would last week but with the news that so many Democrats sided with the Republicans in the House it is possible that Harry Reid may face more pressure to bring it to the floor for a vote than I thought he would.
If he does bring the bill to the floor it will be interesting to see how many Democrats decide that individual Americans deserve the same break Barack Obama gave to employers and how many Democrats determine protecting businesses is more important than protecting ordinary Americans.
And if this bill does somehow make it through the Senate how can Barack Obama–the self-proclaimed middle class warrior–possibly justify not giving individuals the same break he gave to businesses?
With this many Democrats in the House voting in favor of the legislation this has gone beyond the symbolic vote I originally thought it was. Of course Harry Reid is depending on the mainstream media to ignore this story and they probably will and this will provide him with the cover he needs to let the bill remain in limbo.
