Way to stay classy Boston! Bruins fans flood Twitter with #Ni**er after OT loss

May 2, 2014

Back before I really got into following and covering politics full time I used to listen to Boston sports talk radio every chance I got. Boston sports fans like to consider themselves to be the smartest fans in the country. On many occasions I heard people call up and talk about how they understood the game better than most fans across the country. Naturally this did not happen all the time, but it happened enough to show anyone who was paying attention that they felt they were better than other sports fans.

Needless to say, but I will say it anyway, Massachusetts is one of the bluest states in the nation–if not the bluest, so naturally they feel as if they are one of the most tolerant states in the nation. This is not surprising because many liberals believe they are the smartest people in the room, hence the nanny state mentality of governing ‘for our own good.’ However they do not always seem to be as tolerant as they think they are and there is a hypocrisy among Boston sports fans which they do not care to admit or acknowledge.

Back when the Bruins won the Stanley Cup in 2011 goaltender Tim Thomas decided not to go to the White House because he did not agree with Barack Obama. The man who played a huge role in bringing home the first championship since 1972 and who was, before this event, loved by all Boston sports fans, quickly saw his support diminish to the point where he was run out of town. However, in 2004 the General Manager of the Boston Red Sox decided to snub George Bush after the first World Series win in 86 years but, not surprisingly, the Boston sports fans did not have a problem with this. See, he was making a statement…..

I believe this could be called selective outrage.

This is not the only example of Boston liberal intolerance. Who could ever forget what Curt Schilling did for the Red Sox in 2004? The “bloody sock” went down in Red Sox lore and he became one of the most revered Sox players of all time. Well, that was until he became vocal with his political views and came out in support of George Bush. Care to guess what happened to him? They turned on him.

But the most glaring and disgusting example came just last night after the Bruins lost in double overtime to the Montreal Canadians. I will get to that in a moment.

The biggest story in the mainstream media last week was the story about LA Clippers owner  Donald Sterling and the racist remarks he made to his girlfriend. I did not listen to Boston sports talk radio but I guarantee you that most, if not all, of the callers to the radio station were outraged and calling for his head on a silver platter. And if so I have no problem with that whatsoever, there is no place for this in today’s society.

So with that said I have to wonder how the people who consider themselves to be the smartest sports fans in the nation could possibly take to Twitter after the Bruins loss and flood the social media website with racist tweets simply because a black man beat their team in overtime. With so few black men in hockey, P.K. Subban may be the only one in the game today, you would think that people would celebrate this accomplishment. However, it appears that team loyalty trumps race relations in this case.

Here is some of what was trending on Twitter last night:

That stupid n***** doesn’t belong in hockey #whitesonly

– F*** YOU N***** SUBBAN YOU BELONG IN A F****** HOLE NOT AN ICE RINK

– PK Subban = F****** N*****

– F*** PK Subban. F****** n*****. Wish he got sold

– subban is the definition of a n*****

– Someone needs to smack PK subban across his big n***** lips. #scumbag

– SUBBAN IS A F****** PORCH M*****

– F*** that stupid m***** #subban

– F*** you subban you f****** lucky ass n*****!

– Once again, Subban stop being a n*****

Boston sports fans are offended when people call Boston a racist town for they have been fighting this moniker since the days of Tom Yawkey; the Red Sox were the last team in the league to integrate and one has to believe this was more of a reason the Red Sox didn’t win the World Series than the fabled ‘Curse of the Bambino.’ And then there is the story of Bill Russell; all he did was win 11 NBA championships, but he was treated so badly by the fans that he refused to return to the city for many years because of the way he was treated because he was black.

Boston likes to claim that the times have changed, and Bill Russell’s eventual return to the city was supposed to be proof of this, but we can see from the Tweets above that the more things change the more they stay the same.

Way to stay classy Boston! And you wonder why the nation does not think you are as smart, or as classy, as you like to think you guys are…..
