Barack Obama claims he can relate to struggling Americans because he and Michelle once lost their nanny

June 27, 2014

The left loves to claim the Democrats are the party that cares about the lower classes in America but while they rail against the rich, and the unfairness built into the system, they conveniently forget to mention that in many cases they are also very well off.

So when the issue comes up they have to justify their wealth while also trying to distance themselves from it in order to prove they understand the plight of the ordinary American. See, they are not part of the evil rich capitalists–they are better than that.

We saw this recently during an interview with Hillary Clinton when she was asked how she could relate to the average American when she is so wealthy. Her response is well known: she justified her wealth by saying she and Bill were dead broke when they left the White House. And to prove this she said they were having trouble paying for their houses.

Two obvious follow-up questions were left on the table. First, how many houses do you and Bill actually own? And second, if you own several houses how does that make you able to relate to the lower classes? But of course these questions were not asked. Without question this would have been asked of Mitt Romney if he had made that claim during the 2012 election. This would have been used as more justification to prove he was out of touch.

Hillary Clinton then doubled down by saying that while she was wealthy she is different than the wealthy people she attacks because she earned her money and pays taxes on it. Okay…..

Today Barack Obama tried to explain to a woman and her husband how he and Michelle could relate to their struggles. First he read a letter the woman had sent to him.

Minnesota resident “Rebekah [Erier] sent me this letter, and it moved me,” Obama told his donors at an evening fund-raiser in Minneapolis, Minn., as he tried to show he is in touch with ordinary people’s concerns.

“She and her husband married about six, seven years ago; he was in — he was a carpenter, he was in contracting. He had a good job; housing market plummets, loses his job. Gets another job. Gets injured on the job, they accumulate some debt, that job is lost,” Obama said, after noting the couple has two children.

“He gets another job with the railroads, which require him to be away basically four or five days a week while she’s taking care of two kids. … She goes back to school to get an accounting degree [and] ends up with $12,000 worth of debt. She gets a job at the accounting firm, he gets a new job, although at a significantly lower pay, back in construction and he can be with the family more,” he said at the event.

He then went on to explain how he could relate to this family’s plight:

“When I see you, I’m reminded of when Michelle and I were starting off early on, and Michelle calling me in tears because we had just lost the nanny and we had no idea whether we were going to be able to replace her with somebody,” he said.

So, this woman’s husband loses two jobs and is forced to take a job which leaves her alone to take care of two kids. She goes back to school and racks up debt, and Barack Obama claims he can feel her pain because at one point in his life he and Michelle had to let their nanny go?

That is not exactly the same situation now is it? Again I have to wonder what the reaction in the media would have been if Mitt Romney, or any other Republican for that matter, had used the same example to prove they can relate to struggling Americans. I think we know the answer…..

I do not begrudge the Clinton’s or the Obama’s their wealth, but they should probably stop trying to explain how they can understand what we are going through because they cannot and they just sound silly trying to do so.

A better defense, in my opinion, would be to admit they are wealthy and then state they are using this wealth to obtain a position where they will be able to help other Americans reach the same level of success, but I guess they cannot do this because they have labeled all rich people as evil so they do not want to put themselves in that class.

Meh. We’ll never get a President who’s middle class. My understanding is that the Obamas were middle class at one point – perhaps now they’d be called upper upper middle class.

And perhaps Mrs. Obama was so upset because losing the nanny may have meant one of them would have to quit their job to care for the girls, which would have put a real crimp in an upwardly mobile lifestyle – you know, the American dream. So for them, that represented a real obstacle in their journey. He could have found a better example, clearly, but I understand it.

It’s still a lot better than President GHW Bush having a gee whiz moment when he sees price scanners in the supermarket, and someone explains to him they’ve been around for ten years or so, but since he never goes to the supermarket, he hasn’t seen them.

Take good care and may God bless us all!

The Obama’s have made a few million, I think that puts them above upper middle class. To paraphrase Hillary this was an in-artful attempt at trying to look like they understand what we are going through. That is all I was saying and I think I laid out a better way for well off politicians to defend themselves. You are right, it takes money to run for president and we will never have a middle class president but I just wish they would stop trying to say they know what we are going through when they clearly do not.

meh. Just the same as saying, ‘you broke your arm and can’t work? That’s terrible, I broke a nail and have to get a new manicure, so I feel your pain.’

      Same difference.

Was this before Mooch got her $400,000 p/yr no show job at the University of Chicago? No matter, I can commiserate since I too lost my nanny, a typical old Italian white woman, while making $30,000 p/yr at a job I had to show up for five days p/wk. The Obalamas are truly us….Uhm Uhm Uhm.

And to the best of my knowledge that job was so important that it hasn’t been filled since she left it…..

It does make for a good laugh. The funny part is he probably really believes this puts him im the same class. I would love to know what that woman thought when he said this.

Adrienne did a great analysis of our gal Rebekah [Erier] A great snarky post. Worth a view!
Let’s review what we know for sure:
Rebekah lives in St. Anthony Park, MN
    She’s 36 years old
She has two kids in preschool/daycare
    She’s an accountant
She has a large mortgage payment that she struggles to pay
Her preschool costs more than that mortgage
    She has school loans
Her husband can’t find “reliable” work

She sounds like just one more beneficiary of Buck Ofama’s economic miracle. Being a MN resident she more likely than not voted for the messiah twice… Uhm Uhm Uhm.

Hey, we should ALL give this president a break, after all, he is trying to find some “common ground” with us lowly people. He has had a charmed and gifted life from what I have read. Now, Michelle might be closer to our level, but that might be all made up. Do I believe anything they tell us anymore? Well, no, so guess I will take back the “break” I was willing to give them. There once was a time (before we had our savings and retirement ransacked) that I would have thought we were right smack in the middle of middle class, now I just do not know what position we hold. Still working and bringing in money and paying taxes, but just never getting ahead. You have to remember we have not only ourselves to support and those on the dole that live in American as US citizens, but now a whole other branch of our family coming up from down south. Where do you think this will end?
