Whistleblower claims the NSA is storing recorded phone calls, not just metadata

July 12, 2014

The NSA has been defending its domestic spying program by telling us the agency is simply collecting metadata on virtually every single phone call in order to look for patterns which might show a link to terrorism. Because the NSA is not actually listening in on, or recording, phone calls we have been assured our Constitutional rights are not being violated–so we are told.

However a whistleblower has come forward and he is claiming that this is not actually true–the NSA is lying to the American people.

First a little background on the whistleblower, William Binney:

William Binney is one of the highest-level whistleblowers to ever emerge from the NSA. He was a leading code-breaker against the Soviet Union during the Cold War but resigned soon after September 11, disgusted by Washington’s move towards mass surveillance.

And here is part of what he had to say:

“At least 80% of fibre-optic cables globally go via the US”, Binney said. “This is no accident and allows the US to view all communication coming in. At least 80% of all audio calls, not just metadata, are recorded and stored in the US. The NSA lies about what it stores.”

But William Binney did not stop there:

“The ultimate goal of the NSA is total population control”, Binney said, “but I’m a little optimistic with some recent Supreme Court decisions, such as law enforcement mostly now needing a warrant before searching a smartphone.”

According to the article I linked to above William Binney resigned shortly after 9/11 because he did not like what was going on at that point, and it has only seemingly gotten worse since that time, but the question must be asked: does William Binney still have connections in the NSA after all this time or his he speculating?

Who do you think has more credibility at this point? William Binney or the government which is still lying about targeting political opponents, lied about the attack in Benghazi, was trafficking weapons to Mexico, and lied about Americans being able to keep their insurance?

Thanks for picking this up. As you know Binney has been one of my favorite topics, and this update I missed. Why don’t they bring him to Congress? Guess we know the answer. He was so far ahead of the Snowden reveal.

of course they’re saving the phone calls. metadata for the whole planet would fit on a few servers. they had to build a whole data center with multiple buildings in utah to save all of the rest…

if it CAN be done, assume they’re doing it, and act accordingly.

surveillance cameras that are internet-connected? yep. the cameras on the ATM’s? yep. traffic cameras? web cameras? got a camera on your laptop and a microphone? YEP.

if they could point to ONE GUY they caught that was going to do another 9/11…I still wouldn’t be happy with it. I’d still want it demolished and ended. but at least it would have been for something.

currently it’s just the east german Stazi’s wet dream come true. hell this is the fantasy of every stazi bastard that ever existed, rolled into one neat little package.

the only small solace I take in this is THEY KNOW (roughly) HOW MANY OF US THERE ARE. and that makes them very, very scared.
